I've not followed the online comic that is up there now. When in the series is it set? They refer to Walsh flying the ship so it must be before the movie?

Yeah. The only reason I found it at all is that I found a link buried somewhere. I'm normally allergic to MySpace, but for this I made an exception.

Gorram reaver-lovin' Alliance sympas are ruttin' EVERYBY, now!
The mini-comic was fun, but completely pointless in the whole story of things. I happen to be goign through Firefly again, and the acceptance of River is something they've already been through.
Anyway, this story seems to happen slighty before "Serenity" the movie, as Inara and Book are nowhere to be seen.
Firefly - the series that should never have been cancelled, and the franchise that just won't die...

If they're hoping to revive the franchise, this seems a rather pointless way to go about it. Because while it might help fill in a bit of backstory about the 'Verse in general, all it will do for Book is remove a lot of his mystique. Nothing they come up with will really meet anyone's expectations.
Personally I reckon he was an Operative. But I know there's a lot to suggest he wasn't (for instance, if the film-Operative knew who or where he was and it's the reason that settlement got slaughtered, would he leave him to be killed - or rather left for dead without making sure - in battle? Conversely, the Operative might have just ordered that settlement Serbed because it was a known poert of call for Serenity, not realising a predecessor of his was in residence. But I digress). And just coming out and saying he was one would be a let-down no matter how well the framing story was told.

Well, they could give *some* of his backstory without giving away *all* of it.
As to when this story takes place, it seems to happen soon after "Better Days". The guy they're transporting seems to be the bad guy from that book. One of the things he's thinking about is the tooth yanking torture scene (which disturbed me). But I haven't even read the last book in that series yet, so I don't know. But I think Book and Inara are both in that one. They wouldn't be on the heist though, so its not surprising they weren't around.
