I picked up the remastered Children of the Gods DVD from HMV today. For those of you who don't know, they have re-edited and extensively modified the original 2 hour SG-1 Pilot. I actually liked it, most of the changes were for the better. I'm sure there is a more complete list of changes out there, but here are my observations of what is different upon first viewing. It's worth checking out a few minior blemishes aside.

- New takes and shots on the opening slaughter in the Gateroom. No longer does the gate mysteriously open when Apophis leaves - he says something in Go'ould to a Jaffa and offscreen you hear the gate dialing manually.

- All the weapons have the odd tendency to make the same gunshot sound as the P90 as they did in the rest of the series.

- Hammond's questions about writting a book and O'neill's flat joke are gone.

- In the infirmary there is a second body the doctor shows O'neill and Hammond that is a Jaffa female.

- Carter's introductions doesn't have her infamous reproductive organs line.

- Almost all of the Stargate shots have been redone to be more like the puddle as the series progressed. Also, in the pilot and indeed many early seasons they re-used the shot of the gate opening from the pilot where all the tarps and crates were lying around. Now they use different shots to keep the continuity right with no crap laying around.

- The scene where Daniel's wife is in the pen with the other potentional slave girls is gone. Also no more T&A in the undessing scene.

- All of Teal'c's lines have been re-recorded. He sounds like he does in the rest of the series without that strange accent he had in the pilot.

- New score for the whole episode.

- Jaffa made a strange stock metal crashing sound when they die...very strange.

- New VFX shots for Abydos and Chu'lak.

- New gliders during the escape scene.

- Some wonky editing right before the gate opens during the escape from Chu'lak...one of SG-2 members opens fire from behind a piller, then pulls back, but then the frame repeats the one prior so he pops for a few frames. Kinda sloppy editing.

- Season 9-10 wormhole VFX

- The Jaffa hitting the iris made the loud smashing sound they used to before they got rid of that in later seasons.

On a side note, the print looks superb, much better than the original transfer on the season one DVD. The special features are a short explanation of the DVD with Brad Wright and a commentary with himself and RDA himself.

Some things I understand them changing and taking out. For example, the nudity. Not that I'm the type to complain about nudity of a good looking woman. Unlike some Christian fuck... "Oh noes! Boobies!" I think it's odd that they re-dubbed Teal'c. I realize in the pilot they still had things and character traits to hammer down and get right. Most pilots are like that. I thought Capt Carter's line about her reproductive organs was funny. The military is a boy's world, and she was trying to justify herself. Not really an uncommon thing.

I'm slightly annoyed at Hobbes' rather rude decision to be much more attractive than me though. That's just rude. - PsyLiam, Oct 27, 2005.

Hold on... how does a female Jaffa end up in the infirmary? When did a "Jaffita" ever come through the Gate to Earth?

She was one of the serpent guards that was killed in the opening scene. The airmen killed 2, even in the original cut but they never showed the second corpse in the infirmary

Hmmm... must watch this scene again... they must not have ever showed her face, though. Kind of contradicts Teal'c's statement in season 6 that no Gou'ald would send their female Jaffa into battle.

I kind of view the nudity change the same way I view to special edition SW redubbing of Boba Fett's voice - to the long time viewer it seems frivolous and like a knife in the back, but at the same time it does seem out of place given we don't see another boob in 15 seasons. Kinda of like Picard's line in the TNG pilot about being an ass.

The Carter scene plays out more naturally now I feel - she still comes off as tough and no BS but without seeming like a bitchy feminist. For whatever reason they replaced the Macgyver line with "Jury Rigged" which I miss a lot more.

Anyway, I'd encourage everyone to pick this up. On Gateworld there's an interview with Brad Wright and Rob Cooper where they discuss the stalling of production of the SG-1 and Atlantis movie over funding. It's only 16.99 CDN so it's worth picking up if it will show interest in the franchise and get MGM to back them.

No Macgyver line, no boobies and no cater reproductive organs joke- not worth the whopping $20 Best Buy is asking for it.

Seriously, WTF?

Next they'll retcon the Furlings out of contunity too.

Dont talk smack about the Furlings: they have ears everywhere.
One day you'll be going through the Stargate and just never re-materialize.

They probably cut the MacGyver line because it was on 20 years ago. It just isn't as relevant a joke as it was when the pilot originally came out.

By that logic, no one should ever make any pop culture jokes because people won't get them in twenty years. Besides, remember that MacGyver commercial for MasterCard a few years ago?

When the original aired, it made sense. When the revise came out it, it didn't. So they changed it. Besides, I didn't say I agreed with it. Just that it could be the reason. Or maybe they had licensing issues.

And yes... I loved that MasterCard commercial. It was awesome.

I'd say it was just relevant today so they omitted it. I'm not crazy about the removal of it, but at least they didn't pull a Lucasfilm on us and only release the special editions.

Why wouldn't a MacGyver joke work today? Anyone who watches The Simpsons would get the reference...

That's annoying. What's the point of screwing up continuity retroactively?

Maybe it's a lady-boy Jaffa?
