Pretty straightforward, not the best episode ever, but still some good stuff to talk about. Steven Moffat has done much better, but we can't expect perfection always, no?
- People centuries in the future, wearing today's clothes - again. *sigh*.. At least this time they tried to esxplain it as "going back to the basics", even if those basics mean jeans and T-shirts. The Winders, Smilers and Liz X wear retro stuff, though. At least her guns were futuristic.
- The Smilers work not unlike the clockwork droids from "The Girl In the Fireplace", another Moffat work.
- Hey, the big round thing in the console room IS a big monitor! Glad to see this feature of the classic series back.
- The notion that Earth got roasted by solar flares is part of Doctor Who canon. Tom Baker's first season had several stories dealing with this part of history. Nothing about the all countries building their own big ship to run away on. Little confused as to how the UK can build a ship, but no engine while they're at it?
- So Elizabeth X knows all about the Doctor via stories told of his interaction with the British royalty over the centuries. Not all of it was the same royal family though, no? Who maintained all those records?
- Interesting how they built the next episode's story preview directly into the end of this one...

I thought it was a good episode except for the ending. Personally, if I had been enslaved for centuries by the very people I showed up to help, and forced to carry a starship by having a laser shot into my brain, my first thought after being freed would be "IT'S VENGEANCE TIME!"
Oh, and more cracks in the fabric of the universe...

Well, as I recall, she really only mentioned Elizabeth I and Victoria. I mean, I wouldn't expect stories to be passed down from, say, the Plantagenets to the Tudors. But, aside from the brief foray by the Cromwells, all the successions since Henry VII have been by bloodline.

As I recall there was definite mention of one of the Henrys and Elizabeth II as well. Not that a direct bloodline matters. Royal records are royal records, assuming Cromwell didn't fiddle with anything, even now they should have stuff dating back to at least Richard III.

The Star Whale and its role was very Miyazaki-ish. Endless affection and self-sacrifice, wrapped together in a huge fluffy-toy. Damn those writers, damn them to hell. *sniff* :.)
