As much as i like the individual additions (Doggett is the opposite of Mulder and adds an interesting facet to the show, and Cary Elwes is just fun) much of the show just doesn't have the pull of the earlier seasons. Not only are usually excellent stand alone episodes getting less and less interesting (and more farfetched, if that is at all possible), but the Conspiracy ones are just plain boring resorting to such antics as having a skinny dipping Lucy Lawless. Of course, I've been kinda disappointed in the X-Files myth ones for a while now. Finally, Reyes is kinda dull and is just sort of a female Mulder-like believer, but with no interesting drive behind her character that good ole Fox had.
Then there's the old "sexual tension" aspect. Let's face it, that's what a lot of people liked about the show and it was an enjoyable(like the Halloween episode with Lili Tomlin). Of course, now that Mulder's gone, things have just sort of, for lack of a better word, blaaaaahed. Too many characters that just don't have that "thang" Mulder and Scully had. Reyes appears to be sweet on everybody, even Scully (maybe she's just friendly). Maybe they should give some of these agents a spouse or at least some lasting relationship. Apparently everyone on the FBI are loners who live in small apartments with bad lighting.
As for Scully, I don't even know why she's on the show anymore. Last episode she was given a completely throwaway role. If she had just disappeared, it would have had almost no affect on the show. sigh.
Last but not least, the music totally sucks now. I can't seem to figure out what it is exactly, but I believe it has become too "spiritualized" and not enough "creepy". Just watch an episode from the second or third season to see what I mean.

This will probably be the last season, although Chris Carter says there will be a movie with Mulder in it.
BTW, anyone know a good X-Files forum? I'm trying to find someone I might know who might post in one (Dr. Phlox, you may know the person). The problem is, I'm not going to ask this person straight out, "So...do you have any websites on X-files you post at?" You see, this person is a gril I like and... Never mind.

Veers, what's a gril? Anyway, I agree Gish is the Mulder type character. But I believe the characters have been switched ( from male to female and vice versa) Doggett is the Scully type the non-believer. The show is pretty much the same just with different people.

Yeah, but Mulder had the whole Samantha backstory, it made his drive for the truth more believable. Reyes just comes off as a one of those gigglynuts who saw too much Miss Cleo on late night TV and became a "believer".
The switching of roles really happened last year. Scully is a lot more "believer" now, which, come to think of it, is another thing I'm not big on. She was just cooler as the "Don't believe evertyhing, dummy" scientific method chick.

Girls are people you will never have contact with, Phlox.
Who will come back to life this season? I'm betting it will be the Cigarette-Smoking Man, who we never saw die. Too bad they killed Krycek, he was the best villian (and the number of people he killed is really high). And I agree. The show is the same, just with different actors.

Well, I used to really enjoy the series, until I saw the film (movie). I was a bit disappointed in the film, because I thought it just revealed too much, and took a lot of the mystery out of the series. I gradually lost touch with the series after that.
I hope this film Carter's talking about is decent. I think the series deserves a good finale, to do justice to how good the show was (and possibly still is, I don't know). Like USS Vanguard said, the whole relationship between Mulder and Scully, and especially Mulder's dry humour, really made the show.

As far as television goes, The X-Files is still one of the better produced shows on. But as The X-Files go, it just doesn't work. All the right elements are in place, more or less. The episodes are still written and directed well, and the cast is more than capable. But so much of the series was invested in the leads. If I were Carter, I would have shelved The Lone Gunmen idea and waited a year or two, then produced a spinoff with Doggett and Reyes. As a new show, I think it might have worked.

As someone who hasn't watched the Files in over a season (caught a coouple eps last season, but that's it) can someone fill me in on how Mulder left for good this time?

No explaination, as such. They just decided it was too dangerous for him to stick around, so he didn't. I think Skinner talked him into it.

I watched the premiere, that's it. I've been watching Alias on ABC at 9PM. It's an interesting show imo.
