Oh season 1 if fantastic (all the seasons are) It's not like Trek season 1's which take a while to find it's legs... Season 1 Stargate-SG1 is really good.
I had to catch up after I got into mid-season-2 and I watched all the videos of season 1 in a week (I had a voucher for the video store so took advantage of it).
By the end of season 1 you will be GAGGING for more.
The last 4 episodes of season 1 are ABSOLUTELY fantastic. The great thing is there are subtle refernces - TNG style throughout the entire series that refer back to particular episodes. They pick up on little threads that crop up again further down the track. Not to the extent of 'serials' like Babylon 5. Like how I missed the first one and a half seasons - it wasn't hard to pick up what was going on.
After you watched the whole of season 1 (or even more) I advise going back and watching the movie IN LIGHT of the events in SG-1. Yes the movie IS stand-alone - but when you view it thinking of all the story that the TV show brings to it - how it makes the SG1 universe more three dimensional - the movie becomes a WHOLE lot better. I particularly hated the movie (ok I was pretty much apathetic to it) when it came out. Now the movie is REALLY good - if you ignore a few inconsistancies (which I reckon can be explained away)... and YES they still do refer to the events that occured in the movie every now and then.
Nice stuff.

I think we're up to season 4 here in the UK, it's one of my favourite shows. I agree, the movie does get a lot better once you've seen the series, they refer back to it a lot, especially Daniel's wifey(Sharay?) and Jack's son. The only major inconsistancies I can think of are the way the characters look strangely different... Hmm.
The series' writing is great, sometimes I wish Trek could be that good. They manage to make a series with continuity, story arcs, realistic characters and stories and all on a budget that's probably a lot lower than Trek's and they don't have to rely on a ton of SFX either. The spin-off series sounds interesting, it's a shame SG-1 will finish soon though.

One thing that consistantly bamboozles me is the quality of the SG1 sets... they're amazing. Goa'uld ship, Asgaard ship, Alien ruin... all very good.
Re the movie, I think The two Daniel Jackson's are very similar. Michael Shanks really did James Spader's DJ VERY well - then took the character and ran with it.
