I'm not sure just how well the serial style of the TV series is going to translate onto the big screen -- after all, the best part of the story for me was the ongoing mystery about what had been done to River and what those blue-handed guys were trying to do.
Still, I eagerly await the continuation of this excellent story!

Glad to hear it. Best show on TV at the time it got cancelled. Be better if it came back as a series though.

^Agreed, it would be much better if it were a continuing series than a one-off. HBO has been really terrific with a lot of its original programming, but they have always been a bit timid about SF/fantasy stuff, usually only doing one-shots or miniseries. I guess that might change now with CARNIVALE, but I'd really like to see a once-a-month hour or ninety minutes series of spacebased SF on HBO. FF would have fit the bill nicely.
The fact Universal acquired it seems a little weird, given that Universal/Seagram/Vivendi owns a hunk of SciFi but supposedly was looking to dump it. I guess that has more to do with Wheedon's contacts there than any possible outlet for future FF adventures beyond this bigscreen one.

I'm looking forward to Carnivale - then again, I look forward to most of HBO's original programming.
Look on the bright side - perhaps the movie will revive interest in the series, to the point that if not Fox, another network might bring it back.
Here's my question (even though I never saw an episode of the series): is the movie a continuation of some sort of the series (prequel, sequel, whatever), or is it a "reimagining" with a new cast etc. for the benefit of those who didn't see the series?

It's basically going to be a continuation of the series -- they want to get all of the original actors back if possible. I don't know how much they'll be picking up directly from the original storyline -- my guess is that it won't be too much, so that new people like you can go see the movie and not get lost.

One story I read a few months back was that the feature would be a standalone horror story, so I guess that would mean it involves the Reapers/Reavers. I can kind of understand that approach, since you try to deliver a good movie experience first and foremost, but I gotta hope they don't give the characters short shrift.
For me, there was more human interest in any single 'dining room' scene in any ep of FIREFLY than I saw in 20-odd eps of Little Enterprise or however many Voyager's I dozed off on. I'd welcome more of that!
