Several years ago, I read a short story (I think it was called hero). I am trying to track it down again but can't remember the Author, or the collection I found it in. I think it might date back to the early 70s.
The story follows the off world (maybe Jupiter) training of a crack squad of marine types, to defend us from an aggressive alien race (described as flying on broomsticks???). The marines are deceived about the aliens, it is we, the humans that are the aggressors.
Does this ring any bells? I'd love to read it again. I'd like to know the author's name.

It is indeed called "Hero". It was written in 1972 and the author is Joe Haldeman, who would later go on to write the excellent "The Forever War".
