Okay, this is something that's kind of confused me a bit. Part of it is probably because I haven't watched the recent seasons of SG-1 yet (I've seen random episodes up through the end of season five, and I'm in the middle of season two right now, watching the series in order on DVD). So I'm not exactly familiar with all of the background on the Ancients.
But as I understand it, the Ancients (who built the Stargate network) were the first evolution of the humanoid form, and they're supposed to look virtually identical to Humans from Earth.
Now, the Ancients picked themselves up and left the Milky Way some thousands of years ago, and headed out to the Pegasus Galaxy. At that time, Humans were still back in the prehistoric ages, extraordinarily primitive.
So, my question is about all of the natives of the Pegasus Galaxy that the Atlantis team is meeting up with -- are they actually supposed to be Humans, or are they descendants of the Ancients themselves?

The latter. The Ancients colonized Pegasus, then were beaten back/wiped out by the Wraith/plague before the last few of their people ascended, while those of them that didn't escape or die off had the honor of becoming new cattle for the Wraith and technologically regressed over time to the primitive societies they are now.

The Ancients colonized the Pegasus galaxy. Some of those colonies were wiped out and gave birth to a second evolution of thier form, and some have been kept back by the Wraith.
