OK, in TPM Qui Gon tries the Jedi Mind Trick on Watto - and Watto laughs saying that it does work on his species.
Then in AOTC Annakin walks up and he seems to do the mind trick on Watto - to get him to reveal what had happened to his mother.
In TPM Qui Gon bets with Watto on the Pod Races that Annakin would win. If Qui Gon won, he got the ship parts and Annakin. Did he also take the winnings? Cause Annakin comes home with winnings to Shmi. Watto also says "I lost everything" (he bet everything on Sebulba).
In AOTC when Annakin walks up to Watto - he is on the street - wearing a pit-droid's 'head' for a hat. I'm guessing that Watto is on the down and out... living on the street. Is that right? Or is Watto just on the street at the time? Would years of living on the streets have made Watto susceptible to Annakin's Jedi Mind tricks now? Or is Annakin just that much more powerful-a Jedi - or was it is burning urgency to get to his mother what fuelled his apparent ability to perform a mind trick on Watto?

"Did he also take the winnings?"
QG: I have...acquired a Pod in a game of chance. The fastest ever built. W: I hope you didn't kill anyone I know for it. So, you supply the Pod and the entry fee; I supply the boy. We split the winnings fifty-fifty, I think. QG: Fifty-fifty? If it's going to be fifty-fifty, I suggest you front the cash for the entry. If we win, you keep all the winnings, minus the cost of the parts I need... if we lose, you keep my ship. Either way, you win.
Guess QG hussled Wattoo out of that fifty percent, or struck a more lenient deal with him afterwards.
"...living on the street. Is that right?"
Don't think so. The line "let's go look at my records" suggests that Wattoo still owns the yard, because he'd need a place to keep them.

I believe the money Anakin (1 "N" guys) gave to his moms after the pod race came from selling the pod. I'm sure he says that as he comes in, though I don't have a script in front of me.
And no... I never got the impression that Anakin was mind tricking Watto in Ep 2. I think Watto was just surprised or frightened enough to not be difficult.
Though, I suppose it's possible that use of the Dark Side allows someone to get to people that the Light Side wouldn't. They're not so much "tricking" the person's mind as they are forcing thoughts or actions into their heads. Just a thought.

I was leaning more towards - it was the anger and rage and hate and suffering that was boiling up inside of him and - yeah I guess maybe he tapped into the Dark Side.

Well. Shmi did say there was no father...

Watto obviously wasn't living on the street, since they went inside the building he was sitting in front of. But I did get the impression his business wasn't doing as well as it had been doing in TPM.
And I also don't believe that Anakin did any mind tricks. I think, since he wasn't acting particularly friendly, Watto was simply afraid Anakin would kick his ass if he didn't comply. I mean, would you mess w/ a guy who looked in a bad mood, whom you used to own as a slave, whose mother you just told him you sold off, and who was carrying a lightsaber?

On that I think I'll answer "NO".

It should be pointed out that Watto wearing that hat made him leap to second in my list of "all-time great side line Star Wars characters", right behind Ackbar. Who is a god.

It isn't as though I haven't met a lot of people. Goodness knows it isn't that. It isn't just that... it isn't... it's... it's despicable.
