Yeah- the Kiber Crystal let them do a nod to the EU and video games as well- with Yoda mentioning the super-weapons of yesteryear and Anakin having thought they were "just children's stories".
Makes you wonder exactly how much stuff from the Jedi Holocron Vault was deliberately concealed from general knowledge.
