These Ships were classified as a Different Class but Reclassified as a Constitution Class with old Registrys hall numbers on the ship but given New Numbers to follow the Reclassifications. This is why you will see for example 1706/1672 For the USS Exeter.
USS Republic NCC-1371 Was just Classified as a Constitution Class Only

The first thing I see on this list that I don't agree with is the commissioning of the Ambassador with NX and the Horatio in the same year. We'll worry about the year of this later.

If I were SF Command, I would wait until the prototype of my new explorer class was past the testing stages and commissioned with a proper NCC before commissioning another ship of this class. Unless, of course, the Ambassador and the Horatio were dual prototypes like the Victory and the Excalibur in "Call To Arms"...

Id say the that Ambassador was done with her shake down period and this commishoned the other ship so close to her.

It has happened before that some things bypass a prototype phase and go straight to limited production. The Avro Arrow, for example, had five planes built at the same time for initial flight performance tests - and that was a radical design for its time. It's entirely possible that the Ambassador and Horatio were two members of an initial production batch. Maybe Starfleet had the sudden need for big Explorers, and lots of them?

Alternately, it may have been politically necessary to sign a deal for a number of ships simultaneously, so they all got similar NCCs. Yet only one was actually constructed, tested, and then cleared for mass production.

Applying this sort of logic would deprive us of the means to tie NCCs even roughly together with launch dates, though. But every now and then this excuse could indeed be used to get us out of a corner.

About the list: you suggest recommissioning instead of original commissioning for the Brattain. A good idea IMHO, but then you should use that for the Tsiolkovsky as well.

Rarely do they build a prototype and not have a few sister ships on the line right behind it, especially when that prototype is meant to be the first of a long line of production ships. If they don't have a steady stream of ships ready to go after the prototype business goes bad.

Well maybe the ships with the close registries were sister ships, you know built side by side at the same time and were commissioned and launched on ths same day.

I agree, I always thought that starships were assigned names and registrys when they are first commisioned to be built, hence the registry of the Prometheus.

The Prometheus also had the 749xx number. And the Defiant was 74205 while Voyager was 74656. We know that work started on Voyager before work started on Defiant. It's not always the case where a ship is named and numbered as soon as the contract is given.

The problem w/ those examples is that they are all prototype ships. So the registries could be assigned at some other time, say, when the design starts being drawn, or when the project is first commissioned. It wouldn't necessarily be when the ship is ordered to actually be built.

This is the way they worked out to Stardate Comm. and what year they fall by dividing the numbers and this how i cam up with this. I think the Prom. is the 70000 number & NOT the 50000 since its more like voyager and not the firebrand and such.
Do you all think these are about right?
Please let me know of any corrections thats should be made.
