So, how think you of the fan who basically ruined the Cubs chance of going to the World Series? So far:

- The fan has been identified as Steve Bartman.
- As he was led away from the stadium for fan interference, he was heckled by several fans: one shouting (foreboding?) that he ruined the Cubs chances of getting into the World series, a second accusing him of being traitor, and a third shouting about having his house burned to the ground.
- He has stayed at home since then, and his house has been cordoned off by police, and a police car outside his house (hope the cop is not a Cubs fan)
- He has apologized in a statement, but death threats continue to be forwarded to his house.
- To add insult to injury, Florida Governor Jeb Bush has mentioned offering Bartman asylum. Even a Florida lodge owner and avid Marlins fan has offered a 3-month free stay at his hotel.

To quote a certain almost mummified guy in a hospital: "poor guy".

Well, in one way, it's the guy's own fault. You shouldn't reach out over the wall to catch the ball like that. Regardless of whether a player was there to catch it, he couldn't have known for certain which side of the wall it would come down on. So, really, the guy did something pretty stupid.

Maybe stadiums (or "stadia", if you like) should consider not putting seats so close to the field. It's not like people are going to pass of buying tickets just because they have to sit another three feet back.

Now, on the other hand... That guy wasn't the only one getting in the way. It looked like there were three or four others around him reaching into the fray. Those other people are, in theory, just as responsible. The only thing setting this guy apart is that his hand happened to be the one the ball hit.

And the prevailing part of my opinion: anyone who would make death threats (or even remain angry for more than, say, five seconds) over something like this should not be allowed to reproduce, and, preferably, should not be allowed to roam freely through society.

I hate people.

Something similar to this happened in the World Series a few years ago with the Yankees, except with a home run, that a kid in the stands caught a ball that wasn't going to make it but would have been caught by an opposing player, and therefore earned them a ground rule double instead of an out.

The kid got 15 minutes of fame.

This guy is getting the exact opposite. That, and he doesn't sound like the type of guy who enjoys attention (he lives with he parents still...)

Well, I think because it was his team that was winning, so that is ok.

You should see this shit going on, these stupid motherf*cking people.....

Blaming the guy for the f*cking Cubs choking is pretty damned pathetic.... Giving up all those runs was his fault, right....

On the plus side I did get to listen to the hoax interview that a guy did on 92.7 WQLZ that all the news networks were talking about, and part of the interview with the guys that set up the hoax this morning....

He, Rich, the hoaxer, has a Wanted poster in the California Max, a sports bar across the street from Hooters.....

Cubs fans are such f*cking losers.....

The guy is also a Notre Dame grad... which means our local Notre Dame propaganda station, errr... local news station is eating this whole thing up. Their lead story yesterday was a 10 minute anal probe of this guy... they went around interviewing people on the ND campus: "Did you know he is a Notre Dame Grad?" "Oh my God!! Really?!?!"

*sigh*

I hate professional sports. I hate the local news. I hate Notre Dame.

I do have a big ole crush though.

Are you planning an attack of somekind or something? Or are you just referring to the evil mediocrity of the South Bend / Mishawaka area? [Smile]

Yeah, the guy probably shouldn't have reached out and tried to snag a foul ball. That also goes for all the people around him who also reached for the ball (some of whom were, apparently, heckling him on his way out). And, no, I don't think anyone can say with 100% certainty that Alou was going to make the catch even if that section were vacant.

I think a lot of the Cubs fans are acting delusional about the whole thing. How many chances didn't the Cubs have to wrap up the series before that guy got involved? How many chances didn't the Cubs have to wrap up the series after that guy had gotten involved? The Cubs choked, and, instead of relying solely on that damn goat curse, the fans are using him as a scapegoat.

I really feel for the guy, too. He was cursed, threatened, and had beer thrown at him by the fans. He continues to get death threats, and is holed up somewhere with police protection. Hell, even the governor Illinois said that should the guy ever cross the law, he won't be getting clemency from him. All of this for a stupid game.

Bah. Hollywood would make a movie of me masturbating to Bush's State of the Union addresses if there was a controversy surrounding it.

Well seeing as how I used to live in Valparaiso, I know about South Bend. Not only those egotistical morons at Notre Dame, but the city itself is rather crime ridden (of course, so is Gary, so I guess I don't have much room to speak...)

Driving through there on many occasions, the place seemed like a religious yuppie heaven.

I do know that the Illinois governor had considered putting Bartman into the State's Witness Protection Program.

I don't think Chicago would agree though.....
