Snay should shut his hole and stop mixing metaphors, especially ones that recall the most brilliant moment in any Kevin Costner movie, ever, which isn't saying much. That said, I won't post a formal warning in our Moderator Appeal and Personnel Re-Processing and Fish-Price-Control board, nor shall I start pretentiously calling him Snay, nor shall I go now and start the fourth thread of the day about how Archer should be sexually abused by Yridians.

Uh, Snay, perhaps you forgot about the whole no-images-from-other-servers rule? Knock it off before I start getting nasty letters again.
And, for the hell of it, the inside scoop on the TrekBBS problem.
Christian and I had been talking on and off over the past few weeks about finally getting the upgrade going after months of problematic delays. The other day, the resident trolling idiots flooded the registration queue with requests, which totally blew up the index files. A rebuilder script and a few backups took care of THAT problem, but it was clear that the old UBB couldn't take much more of the abuse. Frankly, I'm shocked it lasted as long as it did, especially with those little children trying to take it down.
(Sidenote: Registrations here and on the new Slipstream/TrekBBS scripts are floodchecked. Don't bother with it, you won't get anything done.)
On Saturday morning, I started preparing for the upgrade. To my horror, I found that the server had FAR less memory than I recalled it having, and had *NO* swap space (virtual memory on the filesystem)... In other words, the completely moronic host screwed things up AGAIN.
I spent most of the weekend fixing the server (manual repartitioning of a live server is NOT FUN AT ALL)...
SlipstreamBBS was converted first. Overall, things went well. The few malfunctions that were encountered have been fixed, and almost no data was lost in the import. Of course, the colors MAJORLY suck, but that's only because I couldn't figure out the CSS rules. I've done a second theme which is MUCH easier on the eyes... hopefully it will be OKayed and put up to replace the old one.
Right now, at this moment, the TrekBBS is in the middle of the import. There's a LOT of data to bring in, and I'm nowhere near done with the new moderation queue handler, not that Christian and Lisa can't do it manually like they are on Slipstream.
Performance on this thing is gonna suck majorly unless we can get some more memory in that box. The host really screwed Christian over without anyone realizing it. The host says that the earliest they'll install new memory is Thursday... which is right out unacceptable and rather stupid. If required, we'll open it without the new memory, but MAN that's not gonna be pretty.
Anyway, I've probably said too much.

Wow! Uh, thank you, sir! This is the first time I have ever had a board administrator post in one of my threads! Oh, and merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!

Out of curiosity, Charles, do you have any idea if the old archived threads at the Trek BBS will be reinstated? There are a number of old topics that I've been wishing I had a copy of, but were removed at one point or another.
And, another question out of curiosity -- is the UBB.classic system scheduled for a similar UI upgrade like OpenTopic recently got? (Not sure if I'm really that fond of it, but it's got its good points.)

Importing the archives was part of the original plan, but did not occur - there are too many CURRENT messages for MySQL to handle on that server.
I plan to come up with another soultion to the archive problem - probably another UBB installation.
The OT UI is heavily tied in with a number of changes coming to OT, as well as a number of things we have in the pipeline. There are no plans to port it to Threads or Classic, but both Rick and I do plan to steal elements of the UI. Threads 6.2 can do the collapseable categories, for instance.

I discovered a thread a little while ago -- Basically, Christian got shafted by the company maintaining his server, and has only have the amount of memory (RAM) that they're supposed to. The announcement I read said that the memory will be doubled (from 512 to 1024 MB) within a few days.
Overall, I'm very impressed... and Charles, congratulations for your efforts there! I'm not a regular visitor at the Trek BBS, but I know just how enormous that board has gotten... I'm sure it was a herculean task.
