As should be bluntly obvious to anyone who has lived in the U.S., July 4th is a big holiday. Independence day. Something about kicking the Britishs' collective arses (with quite a bit of help from the French).

In the Jeep dealership near me, this sign:

WE WILL BE CLOSED FOR JULY ___ 2001 -- INDEPENDENCE DAY.

(The "4" was handwritten on the typed page)

Well, I've heard that there's some talk about moving Independence Day to whenever in the week would make a three-day weekend, probably the first Friday in July. Most people don't seem to like the idea, but I suppose that some people are stocking up on flexible signs, just in case.

Other days are celebrated before or after their actual day.... regular employees should love it, having a 3 day weekend for travel and relaxation, instead of this skip around crap....

Me- Hi Jen! What's up!
Jen- You again??!?! Listen kid, I'm not interested in you. Stop bothering me, I'm a lot older than you and I have a boyfriend. How did you find my ICQ number anyways?
Me- Oh, so just cuz you're a movie star now, and you're new album made millions, you think you're too good for me?
Jen- Yes!!! Get it thorough your head! I am a person, I am not Jennifer Lopez the hottest woman on earth that everyone wants to sleep with, I'm a person, leave me alone!!!
Me- Fine! Be that way!
Me- Jen.... Where'd you go.... I love you... please come back.... please....

Independence Day doesn't seem like one of those holidays I can imagined being observed on a different date. Besides I got the day off as a paid holiday even with the store open.

Although I have to admit, it seems kinda lame to have that blank spot on your sign.

I'm slightly annoyed at Hobbes' rather rude decision to be much more attractive than me though. That's just rude. - PsyLiam, Oct 27, 2005.

We use to move the holidays to have three-day weekends here. But Independence Day (July 9th BTW) stays always in that date. Lucky me this time it will be a Monday. Huzzah!

Dunno, it's just the same for me. But it seems that people not in their scolarship years are beginning to FORGET the actual date and purpose of the holiday.

You have wonderfully low expectations of life, dontcha Wes?

TSN: "The US' real independence day is July 2, anyway..."

Jonas: "But Independence Day (July 9th BTW)"

You two both had a go at people who celebrated the 21st century in the year 2000, didn't cha?

Go on then, why is it really on the 2nd of July? Or the 9th?

Yes, you're despicable, and... and picable... and... and you're definitely, definitely despicable. How a person can get so despicable in one lifetime is beyond me. It isn't as though I haven't met a lot of people. Goodness knows it isn't that. It isn't just that... it isn't... it's... it's despicable.

People ARE forgetting the nature and purpose of the holiday. Hell, it's barely being touched on in schools nowadays.

The more conservative folks around here (yeah, in this county, _I'M_ fairly liberal) believe that this is part and parcel with the new 'liberal' version of history, in which the US's Founding Father's accomplisments and efforts are entirely ignored in favor of casting them all as racist, mysogynist, classist... well, everything that liberals always label their enemies as.

Liam: Because it's the anniversary of the day the United States declared independence from Britain. And that happened on 2.Jul.1776. Somehow, though, people took to celebrating the anniversary of 4.Jul.1776, which is nothing more than the day they approved Jefferson's final draft of the declaration document itself.

"The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forevermore. You will think me transported with enthusiasm, but I am not. I am well aware of the toil and blood and treasure that it will cost us to maintain this Declaration and support and defend these States. Yet, through all the gloom, I can see the rays of ravishing light and glory. I can see that the end is more than worth the means."
-John Adams in a letter to his wife, 3.Jul.1776

Somehow, we got the "pomp and parade,...shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations" right, but screwed up the date...

Sounds good. I don't have any airsoft weapons, but I did blow a few things up during these recent nights even though fireworks aren't exactly legal in Georgia. Please don't tell on me!!!
