Hi Guy
I was just wondering if anybody has ever heard what Lucas has though of the Trek franchise compared to his own and what were Roddenbarry thoughts on Wars franchise compared to his own. Was there any type of competition or feud or other things between these two men of the great two houses of science fiction.
Thanks just wondering [Smile] [Big Grin]

I don't recall ever hearing anything. As far as I know they seemed to pretend as if the other didn't exist.

There may be some reference though.

Well Lucas can never deny that if it wasn't for Star Trek that there would be no Star Wars and that if there wasn't any Star Wars there would be no Star Trek post 1979.

And JMS should be thankful to both.

Has anyone noticed some of the little 'elements' of similarities between Star Wars and TOS?

The idea for Cloud City... from "The Cloud Miners"
"Proton Torpedoes"

there are a few others that I thought about a long while ago - but I can't recollect just right now... anyone else?

BTW, I belive Lucas once said to Clint Howard when he went to an audition... the first thing he did was point and say Captain Balok of the Fesarius!"

This topic strikes me as incredibly silly. It's a big world out there. They "pretended the other didn't exist"? Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever heard Lucas talk about his favorite Herbert novel, despite exceedingly broad similarities to Dune. Conspiracy! And was Leslie Nielson ever consulted during the filming of "The Cage"?

THey all owe HG Wells and Alfred Bester their careers.
Period.

Actually, one of the main reasons Star Trek: The Slow Motion Picture got made was because of Star Wars, not the other way around. They were talking about a new ST series at the time, then Star Wars came out, became the biggest thing ever and Paramount spotted a bandwagon flying past. They immediately dropped the Trek II series and decided on a film instead, which then became more films, which begat TNG, which begat DS-9, etc... Even if you don't like Star Wars (I know of no one who hates it) you have to thank Lucas and it's success for completely reviving sci-fi films and TV for years to come, particularly Trek.

Talk about taking the interpretation to the extreme. I never mentioned anything about a conspiracy to not mention one or the other. I just said it seemed like they never acknowledged one or the other which is odd considering they were then and still are the two largest sci-fi franchises in history.

Isn't that what I said? If TMP was '78 then I'm sorry I was incorrect but I'm saying

NO SW if NO TOS, NO Trek - period after... TAS then if no SW.

Why should they be expected to talk about each other, though? They have very little in common. I don't know what James Cameron thinks about Jurassic Park, or Spielberg about Titanic, despite those being two of the most profitable movies of all time.

It's just...I don't know. Plumb crazy.

"THey all owe HG Wells and Alfred Bester their careers."

And of course, the latter owes his career to Davy Jones of the Monkees.

Oh, wait...

Yes, you're despicable, and... and picable... and... and you're definitely, definitely despicable. How a person can get so despicable in one lifetime is beyond me. It isn't as though I haven't met a lot of people. Goodness knows it isn't that. It isn't just that... it isn't... it's... it's despicable.
