Hello everyone,

I'm new to this board but got the address from a thread at 3D Gladiators and thought I'd drop in. I've been working on a 3d model of the Constitution Refit prop, and have finished the exterior modeling and texturing and thought you might like to see it, give feedback or whatever. I know this isn't a 3D site, but figured you'd like to check it out anyways. Your comments would be greatly appreciated!

The reference material I used primarily came from Phil Broad's website at http://www.cloudster.com.

To see the entire wip thread, go to

Here's the pictures:

I followed your WIP there, and I crapped myself. Here, I crapped myself again.

Very damn nice.

(BTW, usually this kind of stuff belongs in "Designs and Creativity, but in no time someone will come along and whisk it off.)

There's also the "Enterprise" thing, but the next thing you know, I'mma gonna smack Topher.

looks freaking fantastic!

Consider the thread moved.

Consider ME moved, too. To tears. This is a work of art. Now all you need to do is add some tiny trees behind the blue arboretum windows at the bottom of the ship... [Smile]

That is freakin' incredible, Jason.

My god, that's amazing! I hope you model some more TOS Movie-era ships.

Hot-damn, that is beyond incredible!

But, erh, Enterprise class? [Razz]

Oooooohhhhh opened a can of worms now, you have!!!!!

Posted by superslowmo (Member # 875) on :

that is some nice work! have you ever considered modelling out the arboretum or botanical whatever that is on the bottom part of the secondary hull? you know, those big windows? i think that's make that even cooler.

but nontheless, its far beyond what i could ever accomplish. :)

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

It is cool. The only thing I can find (and it is the tinest of tiny nitpicks) is that I don't think the running lights were white. Weren't they red and yellow? Or did I imagine that?

Posted by JasonA (Member # 856) on :

Thanks for the awesome feedback guys! cool, I'm glad you guys like its accuracy. I've always loved the movie era ships (all of em really), at least ST:TMP - ST:VI. I like TNG too, but not as much... So Topher, I think I probably will [Smile]

superslowmo, yep I'm going to model 3 major interior sections of the prop. The detail level will vary slightly for each part, but I will probably make the Botanical garden (medium-low detail), the VIP lounge (medium detail) and the Shuttlebay (medium-high detail). I want to be able to do a scene replicating the drydock scene in the movies...

PsyLiam, I think thats a partially true observation. I think the red/green ones are only on the sides of primary hull, basically replicating aviation orientation lights. By seeing where the white, red, green lights are you can tell what direction a plane is heading in without seeing the hull. The rest of are white from what I've seen in the movies. [Smile]

Posted by Topher (Member # 71) on :

Don't be limited by canon... There's plenty of fandom ships of that era. [Wink] [Big Grin]

"replicating the drydock scene in the movies..."

You mean this scene? [Smile]

Posted by JasonA (Member # 856) on :

Naw thats the spacedock from ST:III. I'm going to cheat and put the -A in a drydock like in TMP and ST:II

Basically cause modeling the interior of the spacedock is more than I wanna take on right now [Smile]

very cool.

will be watching for the finished project.

[activates ulterior-motive cloaking device]

Ever read Starship Prototype?

Lots of ships there to model!

And I for one have always wanted to see them in the kind of detail you can do. I also love the TOS-era movie ships

Posted by Topher (Member # 71) on :

I would hope you love those ships, Dave. You wrote the book! [Big Grin]

what's wrong with the detail I did?

Posted by MinutiaeMan (Member # 444) on :

My goodness... that is one excellent model! I'm not sure what else can be said about it.

The following is not a complaint or criticism, just an observation: the detailing of the hull panel lines and the proportions seem perfect, but the hull itself seems to lack the "aztec" pattern and the pearly shine. It seems more of a shiny grey to me.

But like I said, the model is excellent as is -- definitely one of the best I've seen in a while. I don't do any 3D artwork myself, but I believe that such texturing can definitely be one of the trickiest parts. Still, well done! [Smile]

Thanks for the compliments guys!

Treknophyle, no I haven't seen it yet, but I'm interested. I'll check it out, but our local bookstores don't have it.. got any examples you'd like to post?

MinutiaeMan, yes others have mentioned the same thing to me.. well, the spec map is dominating the aztex patterns and the color map I had to go with it is applied *very* lightly... so it seems more greys are showing up than the blues, yellows, oranges and reds.. (they really are there [Smile] ) As for the pearlescent look, well I had some textures that looked like that, but then I decided not to use it cause that look was more with TMP refit than with the "-A". But I may try it again. Some of these textures maps need redoing really so I might just revisit them... my texturing skills far seriously behind my modelign skills [Smile]

Thanks for the great feeback folks! very helpful too... here soon I'll update you all with new exterior photos and a peek of the shuttlebay

We'll be selling some copies eventually, but no, right now your best bet would be to check out the conventions.

Unless anyone else knows of a site with scans?

I do indeed love those ships - that's why I wrote the book. Marketing it and printing it was an afterthought - by somneone else. Those ships have always seemed more 'real' to me - perhaps because they seemed more achievable. The TOS movie ships were clean, sleek and functional - but in no way luxury liners like the Ent-D.

Seeing some of my favorites (Starstalker!!) done by JasonA would be the culmination of a dream (I myself lack the necessary 3d skills).

Posted by Topher (Member # 71) on :

I'm partial to the Belknap, myself. I love that ship... [Smile]

Posted by AndrewR (Member # 44) on :

WOW, FUCKIN' WOW!

Lovely stuff there!

Appropriate too, cause I'm playing the Star Trek II: The Wrath of Kahn soundtrack! [Smile]

*cough* Enterprise Class!?! [Smile]

That's just beautiful!

Posted by AndrewR (Member # 44) on :

Actually, I do have one qualm... why not put some detail into the windows instead of them being just black of 'lights off' and white for 'lights on'.

Especially the bigger windows like the executive lounge and the rec dec.

My big problem with a lot of CGI trek stuff out there - just plain bloody white for windows.

Starstalker!!!

Shipschematics.net has them. If David gives the names, just search for them here.

Posted by The Mike Who Would Be Captain (Member # 709) on :

the main problem i have with shipschematics.net is there is no way to search it based on source.. i can find no way to get it to simply show me all the ships from Starfleet Prototype without going through and clicking 'bibliography' or hatever for EVERY ship .. is there a list of all the ships pictured in that book?

re the detail of the windows stuff...

oops oh, heh, ok thanks.

Because I'm bored:

Archangel
Asmodeus
S'Harien
Athabaska
Ranger
Starstalker
Thruxton
Siva
Scimitar
Pharris
Clarke
Greer
Dupliex
Monoceros
Phantom
Schmidt

Those are some weird arrangements, I say.

Posted by The Mike Who Would Be Captain (Member # 709) on :

oh yeah.. i never liked your.. umm.. judicious use of megaphasers and torpedo tubes and shuttle bays.. they make some of the designs look decidedly ungraceful. just my two cents.

maybe we should have a vote to see which ones we think we'd like modeled the most?

Posted by Topher (Member # 71) on :

Belknap!!!!

Posted by Harry (Member # 265) on :

Out of the above ships, the Thruxton is my favorite. I'm not so sure about the Oberth bashes and the strange nacelle config of the Dupliex.

I'd vote for the more-or-less canon DS9TM Constitution variant (aka "Constant"). And the Belknap after that. [Smile]

Posted by Topher (Member # 71) on :

The Dupliex and the Phantom were attempts at having two nacelles on a ship with no secondary hull and no primary hull addition. However, the tandem nacelle jobby won out over the stacked nacelles. The tandom nacelle is visible in the Scimitar, among others.

Hey, I'm just glad someone remembers these...

Posted by The Mike Who Would Be Captain (Member # 709) on :

i could remember drooling over that book before i was old enough to drool over girls instead, so its a piece of my childhood too.

there arent many fun fan-books these days IMO.. i cant help but think its because the people who would be making them are too busy making webpages now.. has anyone on this board ever considered a new publishing venture?

Posted by Magnus de Pym (Member # 239) on :

If they have, they will have considered the Viacom-Boot-In-Ass venture as well.

Posted by Captain-class, Mike-variant (Member # 709) on :

meh. i'd try it just to see what happens.

Posted by Sol System (Member # 30) on :

That waxes and wanes, though. I've often considered putting out my own 'zine. Though it wouldn't be Star Trek related.

Posted by PsyLiam (Member # 73) on :

I doubt Viacom would care. Unless they have you under contract.

Posted by JasonA (Member # 856) on :

Heya all,

Those are some interesting mvie era variants! Actually I like a couple of em, but some seem a bit ... mmm unconventional [Smile] Basically if I ever make a Miranda class, I'll have almost all the components to make up just about any version in there..

for a later project anyways [Smile]

A bit of an update on some of the interiors I've been working on. I started a decent hangar bay, in TMP style, and fitted it inside the model. Its not the most bitchin but I like it [Smile] Also started some of the cargo area/ airlocks under the saucer section and made up a low detail interior for the VIP lounge. Also, I'm tweaking the textures of the hull to be more shiny white and less grey.

There are still some problems to work out, such as the hangar doors poking through the mesh, saucer top textures incomplete, cargo bay door arms missing etc... so don't view these as finished product pictures, but rather WIP images I guess...

Next on the list is to figure out how t obest make the botanical garden and deal with the rest of the little room windows... I really need some screen caps of room walls from like voyager or something.... (hint, hint)

ok well here's a few pics for you al to check out:

I think I'm going to cry.
Hot damn those are great!

BTW: Some of us are indeed trying fun-fan stuff. My partner and I have completed full-color deckplans for the Intrepid, Nova, Sovereign, and Prometheus classes (same scale as the Ent-A plans I did before). We have plans to complete all of the popular starships. Certain members of Flare have seen the Intrepid-class - or rather the earlier version of it (I keep improving it as time goes by).

And yes, we will try to market them. First we'll approach Pocket Books. We figure if we explain why the Ent-D set didn't sell well, maybe they'll see why ours will.

If that doesn't work, there are other means...

Many major publishers poo-pooed my complete deck plans of the Mega Maid. The entire volume only fills one room, and shows the many differences between the 4,562,308 crew accomodations of the many different Assholes aboard. Who WOULDN'T buy it I ask you!? You should see the, as yet unglimpsed, zoo complex!

Posted by Balaam Xumucane (Member # 419) on :

I suspect it was exactly the positioning and... er... shape of said 'zoo complex' that turned the publishers off, Mike. Really, I mean... Did you think they wouldn't notice?

Jason: This is a beautiful model. Terrific work. As soon as I get my TMP disc back, I can make some captures if you'd like. I do have an ext. arboretum from TWOK if that'll help...

Posted by JasonA (Member # 856) on :

I'm not sure what you mean when you say an ext. Arboreteom... but yes, any info/pics will help! thanks:)
