Well, I've used Xoom, Geocities, and Crosswinds. Out of those three I'd have to say Crosswinds.net is the best...but obviously thats not a definitive list.
The main reason I like it is because it doesn't seem to have any ads at all and has reasonable speeds.

Hrm...I've had nothing but problems with Crosswinds, despite the no ads... Slow speeds, impossible ftp, etc.
Try www.fortunecity.com One ad banner, but 100 megs of space, and I think they only limit 10 meg size.

Well, I have absolutely no gripes with Virtual Avenue. Very easy to use, service is personal, but you only get 20 MB or storage space. But, that's enough for me

I use Freeservers...30 megs, inline ad banner at the top...but no problems I've found so far except that occasionally it zeros out my files...but I think that's the fault of my crappy FTP server.

I have used Fortune City .com and .co.uk. I have found FTP generally unreliable... and the banners are nasty. Xoom has been reliable FTP wise, but the banner at the top of each frame makes youe site look awful.
Geocities looks better now you only have the tiny banner thingy at the top... but again FTP is not to reliable..... So basically I'm saying I have had no luck with free webhosting. My ISP (lineone.net)is better but offers quite limited webspace.

I've found virtualave to be the best. A little on the slow side when compared to pay servers, its reliability beats the hell out of xoom and crosswinds. Pity about the topbanner. But the sub-domain and CGI capability is a big plus.

I've been using FreeServers for more than two years now. Lots of space, as Shik already indicated, good service, good statistics, no problems with FTP, the top-ad is not very annoying, and a subdomain under one of multiple top-level domains to choose from. OTOH, it's occasionaly down.
