I've heard that David Hyde Pierce is a real slob, who dresses really badly and only ever shaves because the job he does, his character, requires it.

Not to sound crazy, but doesn't that apply to most Americans (or indeed, men)?

I do remember seeing him do stand-up once though. He looked a mess. Like those middle-class university students who have seen casual, but can't quite replicate it without error.

He was also shite.
