i've heard "screw the pooch" all my life, half of which was in west palm beach, florida and the other half in cincinnati, ohio.

I remember hearing that phrase in "The Right Stuff" about Grissom's Mercury mission. I thought it meant 'sink the capsule.'

I picked it up in the army, as a term for fucking thing up...

I've never heard that one. But, then, one time I used "clusterfuck" on the 'net, and people didn't understand it.

I don't have a reference, but I read that an air force pilot who "screwed the pooch" had died in a test flight crash. That probably spread to the regular air force for "Top Gun" and then got more popular later on.
