That's pretty close to here in Illinois. It was only that cold for a few days the other week (last week? I've lost all track of time) and now it's about -11C at night and -4 during the day...got about 5 inches of snow, I was walking about in it with a steady ~15km/h wind swirling everything into fairy wonderland, bout 3am this morning...something cool about standing 3m from a train doing 90kph and blowing the snow along itself and obscuring the streetlights...it was kinda like a book, or something. Or maybe an Internet Raytracing Competition entry... ;P

The temps here in the middle of nowhere dropped down to -44 C on Tuesday. And that's not counting the wind chill. At that temp you can spit at a wall and it would bounce back at you. I wish summer would get here soon, I would much prefer +40 over -40 any day of the week.

This is the coldest winter we've had in a long time...and although it was about -30 or so recently, that was *with* wind chill. Actual temperature was closer to -20. During 'normal' years the temperature varies by 40-50 degrees all year...where do you live where it varies by 80?

He'd be in the never-never land of the Canadian prairie... somewhere in Saskatchewan, as I recall.
And it can get pretty damned cold here in NB as well. The coldest we've had this season so far was only -25 or so, I think.

Yeah, the great land of Saskatchewan. If you've ever heard the "Moose Jaw" song by John Wing it'll pretty much explain everything. It's been warming up a bit the last couple of days, we might even see temps in the minus teens next week. And who says global warming is bad?

I didn't know there were places on Earth where there was that much seasonal variation in temperature. Showeth me mine ignorance.

Yeah, we have quite the weather here sometimes. In summer it can be sunny in the morning, and by noon a thunderstorm might roll through, knock down a tree maybe two, and by 2 PM it'll be sunny again. I really like the weather here in the summer. It's winter that kills me.

Speaking of the weather on 2 threads now, I'd like to say what the hell to the snow falling outside that's being chased by *lightning and thunder.*

We use Hyster Forklifts (some bolts are Metric). some pieces of SE i work on ashore have Metric Hardware. SOME aviation components (hardware on some motors, think the Harrier's Motor) use metric. it's just not standard yet (and unlikely)...

Oh, I'd *love* to use metric, but the problem is it's just way too ingrained into everything. It's not just going from using inches to millimeters in my dimensions (or the average person having to use kilometers instead of miles), it's the fact that all the processes, standards, standard parts, standard sheet metal thicknesses, etc. are all based in English units. *That's* where all the problem is in trying to convert this country to metric.

Here in St. Louis, on Thursday, we got eight inches of snow. Today (Monday), it was almost 75°F (24°C). By Wednesday, it's supposed to be below freezing again.
It's not even the first time something like this has happened this year.
