"'Take the sign seriously,' Ms. Weldon said. 'There are signs everywhere: No more than 15 people or 3,000 pounds.'"
Actually, I'm guessing 26 teenage cheerleaders may quite possibly have totalled less than 3000 pounds.

This is America. Going by the Standard American Diet (TM), I'm pretty sure that 26 teenage cheerleaders will probably be more than 3000 pounds.

Well, if they were all in the 125lb range then 26 of them would top out at over 3000lbs. I was trapped in a lift once, with just a few people (no army of cheerleaders) and the scariest aspect was just how hot and stuffy it got in a very short period of time. Not to the point that we were fainting, but certainly very uncomfortable very quickly.

Yeah, but she said no-one was over 125 lbs. Meaning that quite a few were probably under.
And, if they were trying to maximize their number in the elevator, they probably would have gone with the smallest girls available.
As for why the elevator broke, at a guess I would say it was more about their volume than their weight. If they were pressed up against the door, it may have been deflecting enough to stop it from opening properly. I guess. (I am not an elevator expert.)

Ah cheerleaders, nature's little joke. So hot, yet so incredibly stupid.

I've been in an elevator with 15 200lb-ish men at once. It got up to the 8th floor before it sunk slowly back down to the 1st and opened its doors. Why campus authorities decided to put 200 orientating freshmen on the top three floors of a 20-storey dorm....

Uh, depends...how old are you? The Creepy Old Guy at the kegger doesn't usually go home with the cheerleader...

Almost certainly a crappy (and slooow) hydraulic elevator. A cable lift would've just snapped- causing serious injury/death to all those aboard.
