I figured this might become a little bit incendiary, so I posted in here just in case.
Our vehicle insurance rates are rather high, due to accidents on my father's part, one on my brother's part, and one on my part. When it came time to renew our insurance last year, the company that my parents had been with faithfully and with no problems for 20+ years refused to renew their plan. So their insurance broker had to search for another company with acceptable rates. He found one, but the rates went up a bit. Now, the old company bought out the one we were currently with, and they initially refused to insurance. My father went in to talk with the broker, and they worked out an initial plan of $5600/yr for a 2001 Ford Focus 2.0L auto and a 1996 Ford F150 5.0L(-ish) auto, along with my parents, and myself as a tertiary driver for both vehicles. So far my speeding ticket hasn't become an issue.
My father went in to talk with the insurance broker again today and was informed that the insurance company wants us to pay $6000/yr. This would result in my dad having to either sell his pride and joy, the best truck we've ever had, or (more likely) putting it off the road and putting his 1988 Ford Ranger 5-speed manual. We were also informed that in January, vehicle insurance rates would be increasing 85%.
Why does this happen and why is it allowed to happen? How do these insurance companies get away with it?! I think it may have been the worst idea ever to make vehicle insurance mandatory, as the insurance companies can raise the rates all they want and people have no choice but to pay them.
Now, we have yet to look into other insurance companies, but the situation is looking pretty grim. As it is, I pay $80/mo for insurance. However, due to my going to uni, I have to pay $100/mo on tuition, and I can only work on weekends at $6.50/hr. If I have to shell out $300/mo, I wouldn't be able to work enough to pay it. I'd have to drop a lot of courses at university in order to work enough to pay everything. It wouldn't matter if I was on the insurance plan or not (which may happen if I lose my license).
So, in short, stupid fuckin' insurance companies

So who should pay to fix the damage YOU cause when you're in an accident that's YOUR fault?
From what I understand, you've been a bit of reckless driver yourself. Work on your driving skills and stop blaming the insurance company for getting pissed at having to shell out lots of cash to cover your family's mishaps behind the wheel.

Believe it or not, I'm with Snay. The insurance company has every right to charge you whatever they feel necessary to cover their risk in insuring drivers based on their driving records, which, as you pointed out, are less than stellar.

The frell? I'm on my parents policy which they've held for three decades, I have a perfect record, I get all the good student discounts, and the car is actually in my parents' names, and yet my bill is still over $100 a month. What, are you only paying a fraction of the bill? You're getting an absurdly good deal, especially if that's Canadian dollars.

Undergrad full time tuition $2,784.00 Divide by 4, gets $696 which equals about to......what the fuck? I'm not even including co-op fees, student services fees, books, etc.
What the heck program needs only $100/month?

Cars are dick all, it is motorcycle insurance that we get ripped off on. I have never had an accident on a motorcycle, been driving one for over 20 years. Last speeding ticket on a motorcycle was in 1982. Last accident in any vehicle was 1992. I have a six star rating.(highest you can get) And I pay $565 for plpd(just covers other persons vehicle), if I wanted comprehensive (fire, theft, collision) then it would be over a thousand. I get to ride from late April until mid to late Oct. and I can't get 6 month insurance.
