These must be good news. Great news. SPLENDID news. I mean, what other type of news moves this slowly?

When the archives opened, they were WIDE open for the first few years. IIRC, these plans were all over the papers in 1993 or so already, with a big centerfold map on one of our weeklies so that everybody could check whether their foreign relatives, pen pals or drinking buddies would have been nuked in a parallel past. (No mushroom clouds reserved for Finland; there were some marigin scribbles about sparrows vs. howlizers, and the need to spare ammo...)

I rather doubt NATO would have nuked Poland back: the very idea of lobbing H-bombs (and chemicals) left and right was to make vaporware out of the airfields and carriers that could have supported a USAF/USN counterstrike within the first month of fighting, and it would have been practically impossible to retarget the strategic-level NATO weapons for battlefield support. By pulling all stops on first use of tactical nukes, the Soviets apparently wanted to LIMIT the conflict by leaving the enemy with just two choices: roll over, or start a strategic, unlimited nuke exchange without scaleback option.

Albert Einstein: temporal assassin. Why can't more games do shit like that?

There were those experiements with nuclear artillery, is that what would level Poland? Because ICBMs from Germany might be better off with a Eurail pass.

Jeeez.
I cant believe you had to explain it to them.
To this crowd, no less....Where is the movie-geek and the googler?
Where is the horn that was blowing?
They have passed like rain on the mountains,
Like wind in the meadow.
The days have come down in the west,
Behind the hills, Into shadow.
How did it come to this?
