Back on topic... I think they should get home 2-5 eps before the series ending and wrap loose ties up. Not too much to bore you but not too little to give it closure.

The end of the series and their homecoming (IMHO) can't be about something new or even totally about wrapping up loose ends in the characters backstories. I'm not even sure we sure see very much of that. If we do it should be brief. Something happens in the middle of the emotional stuff that calls them back into action. For the ending to be truly exciting and satisfying, it needs to have something to do with Voyager's experiences in the Delta Quadrant, not with things that happened before they got there. Perhaps something with the female Caretaker. If the end focuses on the crew's pre series activities, it'll turn the whole series into just a detour in their lives that, in the end, didn't really mean anything. Like TNG and DS9, the finale and the homecoming should leave the near future open and a bit unseen.

IMO, they could do a decent finale with the crew still on it's way home. The series has always been about the trip. They need to focus on the journey the crew has taken and the results of it.
