I think that if they either make specific mention of the fact that it is given a suffix as a way of honoring the previous ship, or if they do make some 'modifications' and point that out it would be fine. But if they just stick an A onto it without any explanation or just because they indulged some stupid fantasy about blowing it up but were too lazy to come up with another ship so they just pasted an A on, then it would be pretty bad. BTW, have we gotten confirmation that the ship is for sure going to be another Defiant class? How do we know it's not a Steamrunner, Akira, or GASP Sovereign? Maybe all that talk we've been hearing about a Sovereign in the last episodes isn't about the E-E but about the new Defiant?
Ok, okay, wishful thinking I know. But still...dare to dream, it could be something other than a Defiant class.

Shadow: Our planet has millions of names from various cultures, history, and geography. If you add the worlds of the Federation, the list of available names is in the tens of millions. A name could be retired and another used in its place. I believe that giving the name Defiant and the suffix results from a lack of imagination.

But, then, all we've seen are English names, plus one or two Vulcan ones...

I doubt it, unless the Bolians use names like Lexington, Excalibur, Yamaguchi, etc.

Mind you, think of the words that might be swaerwords in another language. . . Imagine an Alien Nation crossover where the USS Sykes encounters the Newcomer race, and completely fails to be taken seriously. . . 8)

Maybe all those ship names we think are English really ARE alien names. Talk about your theories of indeterminacy.
