First of all i must say "What you leave behind..." is one of the best DS9 episodes ever, BUT i would have changed one major thing- The Spacebattle.

I find it very sadd that the last battle did not evolve around DS9 itself! I really would like to have seen a major spacebattle around DS9 while Starfleet ships dogfighting the Jem'Hadar Cruisers.
And of course the Super-Dominion Cruisers would've been used a lot better then protecting Cardassia.

Timeline:
All the events on Cardassia would remain the same (Garak,Kira and Damar), only subtile changes on Bajor (Dukat should become very angry that the Dominion is attacking DS9 and so bringing his plans in jeopardy) only some major changes on the Defiant.
So Dominion would've rampaged through the Chin'toka system and making its final and most violant aproach on DS9. The Alliance (Federation,Klingon and Romulan)must make their final stand or otherwise the Dominion will regain the wormhole.
While the battle continues (of course no reused scenes )Kira, Garak and Damar storyline remains the same, so the Cardassians turn their back on the Dominion-Fleet, so the retreat is imminent.
While the Dominion is retreating and regrouping towards Cardassia, the Alliance Fleet is following them desperatly.
And at Cardassia would be the final battle while Odo struggles to convince the female founder to surrender, which she does after seeing how many their brave Jem'Hadars are dying in the battle and ,of course, because Odo linked with her to cure and convince her.

Well, that's how o would've solved it, i really missed DS9 in final ep. This spacebattles seen in "Way of the Warrior" and "Call to arms..." with Dominion and Alliance ships would surely looked have cool.

Anyway, my version is more action orientated, which is not everyones favourite way....

Well, I certainly wouldn't have "deity-fied" Sisko. That was a tad bit of a rip off from B-5. And, yes, I know he had to send Dukat off to Bajoran Hell, but still...

I wouldn't have given them a new Defiant-Class ship. Cheapened the destruction of the "Defiant" IMHO.

I would have had no reused footage.
I wouldn't have had spliced together the Sisko/Dukat story in that manner - it was too tacked on after all the action.

I would rework it. It would be special. No! It would be beyond special! It would be an orgasm! A single hurried GASP of emotion sent thundering across the nation. It would leave you empty, so empty, so alive. You could not live afterwards. You would not have to.

LOL

* vulcan tone * Did i hear there a hint of emotion?

No, i did not mean to increase (only) the battle scenes...
maybe new plotpoints...
or some story should be changed.

And i agree with JeffK, the destruction of the Defiant was not that shocking, i found it rather disturbing to see Earth in shambles.

I would have destoyed the Defiant in the last episode,
in middle of the storyarc was not a good idea. I think everybody knew there would be a replacement ship after all.

Well, I thought the Defiant's destruction was shocking ...

But it was cheapened when they replaced it with a ship of the same class. I mean, if you're going to do that, why bother replacing it at all? I felt it had more meaning earlier in the arc to show that the war wasn't going so hot for the Feds ...

According to the DS9 Companion, they wanted to off the Defiant to accent the sense of loss the war was invoking on everyone and thing. Personally, I thought it was a cheap death scene , a la Tasha Yar. They were just cruising along, and suddenly the Defiant was destroyed. Oops!

Replacing it with another Defiant wasn't bad, but I really wish the VFX guys could have had the time to use all-new footage instead of cycling the stock stuff again. For those who don't know, this was the real reason the new shots in WYLB had the old Defiant's rego on the new ship - they were under serious time constraints. They showed all ten final episodes in a row, giving them very little time to finish all the shots for the final episode. Sucks.

If *I* would have done it (and hindsight it 20/20), I would have destroyed the Defiant at the very beginning of the ten-episode arc, introduced the new ship two or three episodes after that, and written a plot or subplot with everyone having to deal with the new ship. You could have kept the sets, but spread the production money around to modify them more. If the VFX people would have had the time, I'd put a few modifications on the outside of the ship too.

I agree. Apart from the episode revolving about the crew getting used to the Defiant (which would ahve slowed the pace RIGHT down, even more so that Bashir and O'Brien having their Last Grand Adventure).

I don't think the final battle should have taken place at DS9. Sure, it would have looked cool, but story-wise, it wouldn't have made much sense. If they beat them at DS9, they'd still have to go to Cardassia to finish the war, and I doubt the Dominion would have left that unprotected. You'd have had two Very Important Battles in one episode. Silly.

In that case, I'd have had the Defiant destroyed at the hands of the orbital weapons platforms in "Tears of the Prophets", with Kira sacrificing the ship to imprint the warp signature onto the rock, and beaming away just in time.

The biggest thing that bugged me (aside form the reused footage and spliced together Sisko storyline) was the way they dealt with Jake. The series started out with their relationship being very important and now Sisko leaves and doesn't even tell Kassidy to say goodbye for him. I thought this majorly SUCKED!! I thought the last scene with him and Kira was great, but Sisko should've never abandoned his son like that.

Well, who knows: perhaps Ben never left Jake for real? The Prophets have been known to now and then speak with mortals who sit outside the wormhole. Perhaps Ben is keeping the channel constantly open? Might be an interesting storyline. Bajorans finding out that "The son of the Emissary channels His words for us" and driving Jake nuts with their endless questions and requests...

What I'd have changed about "WYLB" would have been adding a teeny weeny little scene in the end, with a zillion extras cheering as the new Kai declares Bajor a member of the UFP, just as the Emissary would have wished...

I loved the political nature of DS9's first couple of seasons and think that a similar story revolving around the again vacant position of the Kai and Bajor's UFP entrance would be great. The only thing is, I sort of got the impression from WYLB that Sisko's dealings with the Bajorans are done. He completed his task. Say what you want, I still think Sisko died as a corporeal entity. The Prophets took his "soul" or "pah" or whatever, but I think he's dead. The Prophets knew he would have to give his life to stop the Pah Wraiths. That was his path and they knew tha if he married Kassidy, he would leave her a widow. True, they could always bring him back...
