Perhaps, as in James P. Hogan's Voyage From Yesteryear, the currency is competency. the more competent you are at your various skills, the "richer" you are. If you're a complete incompetent fuck-up, you end up rockrigging, cleaning plasma conduits, wearing silly checkered outfitts for a weird woman in a big hat on a starship, or just on the grift.
