So... will this movie be totally ignoring the series? I mean, how much earlier can the early adventures of the Enterprise crew get and still involve Chekov, Uhura and Spock? Including Uhura and Chekov would definitely put it under Kirk's command or possibly right before. And how can you have a "young" Chekov? The guy was supposed to be in his 20's during the series, right?

They've shown on Trek before that cadets still in the Academy can serve on starships (I'd assume in a "get me a coffee, kid" type role) so maybe that's where they'll go with him. My biggest problem is gonna be connecting the actors to the characters - it won't LOOK like Kirk, it won't LOOK like Spock, etc.

Well it will look quite a bit like Spock. Zachary Quinto almost looks the part even without the pointy ears and eyebrows. Last night I saw a little interview with him where he was holding his hands behind his back(this was before he was cast as Spock) and I could really see him standing on the bridge with one eyebrow up, scrutinizing something on the viewscreen.

I really want this to be good and I am trying to maintain some cautious optimism, but it's really starting to look like a dumb "how they all got together" thing. I mean, it's too much of a "cute" coincidence that all of them met and worked together prior to TOS. What's wrong with them all being from separate backgrounds? Why does everything have to be so unbelievably ridiculously "neat"?

I think that when they refer to a character as "young," they're just trying to differentiate the new actor from the original one. It doesn't necessarily mean that Yelchin's Chekov is supposed to be younger that Koenig's Chekov during TOS's run. At least that's what I'm hoping; I'd rather see the movie take place during the TOS period, and not some "Stafleet Academy" bullshit.

Exactly. That's why I'm hoping it will take place during TOS. Of course, if they actually do have separate backgrounds, and then meet up later, that would actually work out very well. However, I'm not optimistic that a 2 1/2 hour movie would successfully portray that with seven different people.

No, it won't. It will probably be some nonsense how they're all nearly the same age and all went to the Academy together or something like that.
I've seen other stories like this before. I'm thinking back in the DC Comics days. Let's just ignore the fact they're all different ages, different backgrounds, etc...

I've been following this fairly closely and my money is on the story starting in the early 2260's(or whenever Kirk graduated), centering around Kirk and Spock for half an hour, with the other characters only coming in later on. I wouldn't be surprised if Chekov only turned up in the last hour or so as the story jumps ahead to the 1701's first mission with Kirk in the big chair.
The main focus is supposed to be on a typical Trek movie "Enterprise Vs villain" story, so I can't see the crew all meeting up at the academy. It seems more likely that the majority of them will meet for the first time on the bridge of the Enterprise.
And so far the people behind the movie seem very respectful of Trek canon, so I'd have more confidence in them. At least until we know more. So far the castings seem bang on to me.

They could be taking the tack that TOS actually covered years 3, 4, & 5 of the crew's first mission. This could then occur as an early adventure of the original crew before they meshed so effectively. That would also help explain away any the new actors not enteracting in the same way as TOS because they haven't gotten familiar with each other.

To date, the only known characters that have been casted are young Spock, young Chekov, young Uhura, and old Spock (Nimoy is returning). They are still trying to get Shatner back as old Kirk. He and they want in, but something along the way is preventing it so far and it hasn't been explained what the holdup is.

Yeah....Shatners first say in production is all the reason needed not to allow him on cast.
Fuck Kirk- I want to see a Captain Pike in command!

I remember reading a...gulp...Starfleet Academy novel where a young Kirk, Spock, and McCoy are rescued from Klingons by dear old Captain Pike of the Starship Enterprise. But it was brief cameo.
