Is that true? I was under the impression that Shatner wanted to be in the movie, but TPTB told him no, because in the future segments, his Kirk is supposed to be, uh...dead. Remember "Generations," Bill? I thought Nimoy's Spock segments were to take place in the 24th century.

As I understand it, he wants in but he won't just do a walk-on cameo (fair enough) the problem seams to be that the script doesn't have any room for an elder Kirk, at least not one that's substantial enough to justify his being a part of it.
Assuming the Nimoy/Spock part of the movies is post Nemesis and that they want to keep Kirk pushing up daisies, the only way Bill could realistically appear as Kirk is as a hologram. Visiting a holosuite and programming a recreation of Kirk is not something I can see Spock doing without a very good reason and if the plot doesn't already involve that, shoehorning it in would be difficult and feel forced.
I suppose it's possible to have him as another Kirk, like his 24th century ancestor, or I suppose his grandfather, would be possible, but again without the character being important to the plot it would just be a overblown cameo. If I recall there was a similar situation when they tried to think of a way of getting Shatner on Enterprise.
As much as I enjoy Shatner and his shtick and disappointed that his last hurrah as Kirk was the mediocre Generations, I like it even less if they squeeze him into this film for the sake of a cameo.
