Paramount Pictures has reportedly shot down two ideas for a fifth Star Trek series. Ideas pitched by Trek bigwig Rick Berman and Voyager producer Brannon Braga were reportedly rejected, one idea said to be a mixture of Trek adventure and X-Files-like strangness. Another Next Generation film could be coming 2-3 years down the road, with another TV show-this one to take place at Starfleet Academy-getting the green light.

I know most people hate the idea of an Academy series, but compared to the USS Excellent, I'd have to go with the Academy one. I think it has a lot of potential. Like for example the group of cadets the show follows could go on field trips to starbases, onboard several different classes of ships for training and such. I personally think that done right, good writers and actors it might have a chance.

Anyway, I haven't heard anything new since. Considering that I've recently read the second rumor of the Excellent series, this seems to be the current direction. We should give them a chance...

I've never liked this "Starfleet Academy" idea.
- With so few permenant sets, it would cost a fortune. - With the age group that would be the primary players (the cadets themselves, ages 18-26), you'd lose the demographic that Trek attracts (25-35 year old males -- this isn't my opinion, it's what the Nielsen ratings say...) - IMO (nothing humble about it), the whole thing would rapidly degenerate into Star Trek:90210.
I'll go with "Excellent."

I'd go with a break for a while, why do we need a new trek series right now? why don't they just put the trek universe on hold for a few years untill someone actually gets inspired. I mean anyone can bludgen together a few ideas for a series, if their jobs depend on it, but it would probably suck, because it was created for the wrong reason.

Gepta: I think yours is probably an opinion shared by quite a few. However, if a great series can be made, who wouldn't want more Trek? I seriously think that the creators should start doing some surfing and see what the fans are saying about story ideas. It might do them some good.
I have to say, though, that I'm a Trek whore. I'll probably waych whatever they put on, if for no other reason than to keep up with the timeline and starship designs so I can write a better story.

OK, I say give Trek a Rest - sheesh I need time to Digest DS9 - and I really want to immerse myself in Voyager - either one I haven't been able to do when both Series have been on.
The Academy Idea... shite! yes Trek 90210 or Dawson's Dilithium Crystals or Lt. Felicity or Away Team of 5... I could go on.
Excellent sounds rediculous too - I mean the name alone sounds poxy.
I reckon you could think of a better starship name in about minute...
USS Courageous there you go.

See that's where I think everyone's wrong. Nobody likes the idea of an Academy series because they think it'd be like the teen shows on The WB or something. But it would still be a Trek show, I doubt it will sink as low as 90210.
As far as "Excellent" goes... the ship's name is USS Excellent for crying out loud! I can only imgine it's sister ship's name, USS Awesome?

My understanding is that the name "Excellent" comes from a British warship, but I couldn't find any references on the internet to such a ship. Any maritime history buffs want to give it a try?
(This name would certainly fit in with the British practice of naming ships with tough-sounding adjectives: HMS Invincible, for example... or how about RMS Titanic?)

Which is why the last three British ships commisioned have been the HMS Oi! You looking at my bird?; the HMS You starting something?; and the HMS Fuck-off tosser.
Which would make for an interesting series at least.
