In defense of Harriman, I'd like to think he was so unsure of himself because Kirk was on his bridge. Perhaps he was in awe and neverous because he had a living legend on his ship and didn't want to look stupid or make the wrong choice. He did afterall volunteer to go to the deflector room first so I think he has at least some courage.

Why not see the Excelsior in the 24th Century? I was mentioned in "Interface" and that would fix the tech. Sulu could be a recurring character but playing an admiral this time. Of course that means that someone has to captain the Excelsior, but I would hope that that will not be a problem.

I like the idea of an Enterprise-C show. I always loved the design of the Ambassador-class, one of my absolute favourites. I was sorely disappointed when we didnt get to see any ambassadors in all the fleet-battles in the latest ds9-episodes. I also thought that the actress playing Rachel Garret was great! The captain herself must have been something else, going down defending Narendra III! Although they botched that in yesterdays enterprise, killing her in the other timeline :-(

Not to stray TOO far off the subject, but...
According to notices at psiphi.org, John Ordover sez that if he gets a thousand personal (NOT form or petition) pro-idea letters by May 1, there'll be another Captain Sulu BOOK.
Well, it's better than nothing...
