The Battle of Axanar was some early and extremely monumental battle in the 2250s. Who they were fighting is not known, but Starfleet captain Garth (Kirk's Hero) led the Federation forces. It was from "Whom the God's Destroy". I know its not a very famous reference, but it be fascinating to see a big starfleet battle w/ old style ships.

Does Sulu mean anything in Japanese?

Of course, Sulu was from San Fransisco, and, if the unusable scene from STIV is to be believed, so is his great (something) grandfather. So there's plenty of time for one of his anscestors to marry someone with a foreign surname.

Any series plot will work if done right. This has potential. It's just a question of whether they'll get it right this time. Maybe they'll be smart enough to plan it all out in advance?

As for the Enterprise, we already know that there was a previous space-faring vessel called the Enterprise. A picture of it was shown to the Ilia probe in TMP. Now listing this one as a STARFLEET ship, THAT would probably be a mistake. I'd go for the theory that the original big-E was an Earth ship that got assimilated into Starfleet when the Federation was formed.

As for our Japanese comm officer, is it possible that her name means the same thing as Nyota Uhura: Star Freedom?

JK:

That wasn't T'Pau in ST3. It was T'Lar.

Guys, you're forgetting the ever-schemeing ROMULANS! Remember the Earth-Romulan War from 2156-2160? This would be fresh in the UFP's memory.

The Daedalus-class starhship would be the Constitution if its time. Also, depending on what years "Enterprise" takes place, in 2169 a new type of impulse drive is adopted for Starfleet vessels. The great Vulcan Ambassador Sarek is a wee little boy (b.2165). The Prime Directive is only introduced in 2168.

All my info is from the Star Trek Chronology. This transmission is now terminated. :P

Sulu don't mean a damn thing in Japanese. In fact, the closest you can get is "suru" (the infinitive form of "do") because the usual transliteration method doesn't have "L." When Star Trek is dubbed into Japanese, they give Sulu a real Japanese name, Kato, I think. I remember once reading a semicanon explanation that Sulu was supposed to be Japanese-Filipino. The Sulu Sea is a body of water near the Philippines.

Sato is a pretty common Japanese last name, but I'm not exactly sure what it means. Most Japanese last names are geographical, meaning, "middle field," "in the mountains," and such. I doubt "Sato" means freedom.

Masao... what does... well, Masao mean in Japanese!?!

And couldn't Sulu, just be a "made-up" name or a combination of to other words, or a shortening... over the centuries??

Andrew: Embarassingly, my name combines the Kanji (ideogram) meaning "true," "genuine" or "reality" (also appears in such words as photograph, truth, midnight, vacuum, and pitch black) and the kanji meaning "male," "brave," and "great." Please don't laugh!

"Sulu" sure doesn't sound Japanese because Japanese doesn't have an "l" sound. Strictly speaking, it doesn't have an "r" sound either. The sound it does have is halfway between "l" and "r," which is why most Japanese can't distinguish the sounds or pronounce them correctly. (When English speakers learn Japanese, they are told to think of "r" and say "l" or vice versa.) When Japanese write English words in their 46-character phonetic alphabet, "la" and "ra," for example, are written with the same character. In Japanese, the words "rock" and "lock" would be transliterated identically. The Japanese "l/r" sound is always written as "r" when Japanese words are transliterated into English.
