My buddy Keith hasn't seen an ep of TNG in years, so now that I've got all these laserdiscs (first season, mostly), he's begged me to make him a tape. So, I'm figuring I'm going to grab an eight-hour tape and put these on for him:
Encounter at Farpoint, Lonely Among Us, The Battle, Heart of Glory, Datalore, Arsenal of Freedom, Coming of Age, Skin of Evil, Conspiracy
Thoughts?

Watch 8-hr tapes. If you put them in fast rewinders, they have a tendency to break or come off the spool at the beginning of the tape.

It's not the tapes, it's the rewinder. We once had a rewinder, but it went kaput on us and ruined a couple of tapes. Good thing none of them were rentals...

8 hour tapes would be 4 hour tapes on LP, right? I've never had any real problems with them. Although I'd never tape anything on LP. The sound quality drops badly. Urgh.

I've never had a problem with 8-hour tapes. Last year my sister taped the entire "Babylon 5" series... all 110 episodes. And rewatched half of them at least five times...
As for the first season eps, here's my top 8 choices (in no particular order):
1. "Encounter at Farpoint, Part 1" 2. "Encounter at Farpoint, Part 2" 3. "11001001" 4. "The Battle" 5. "Heart of Glory" 6. "Conspiracy" 7. "Datalore" 8. "Coming of Age"

I've never really cared for "Encouter at Farpoint". It's probably the worst out of all 5 Trek pilots.
Howsabout the Neutral Zone? Sure, the Romulan part should have been the A-plot, but the humans are occasionally amusing. Plus, it has a Doctor WHo reference in it! Class!

I'm not a big fan of EatF myself, but he asked me to put that on the tape because he hasn't seen it in 14 years or so.

No Sylv, cause he wasn't a Doctor by the time that ep was made.

Yeah, I heard the producers made a lot of "in-jokes" for the episode because filming the first season had been so trying on the cast and crew.
