Or detachable shuttlebays (HAHAHA). But honestly, why not have booster nacelles, at least I like it more than a ship with three nacelles. Maybe the additional nacelles were only used for a Nebula testbed or temporarily for the USS Nebula, until the full performance of the newly developed main nacelles was available.

The small nacelles could be the same size as the New Orleans nacelles, and this makes the whole thing a bit more consistent again.

I doubt it. If the saucer separated, thesmall nacelles would still be attached to the secondary hull...
