I used to try not to use "the" before ship names, but everyone else does, so I don't worry about it so much anymore...

So you're supposed to put a "the" before a U.S.S., but not an HMS?

HMS Repulse was a British battlercuriser in the Indian Ocean during Owrld War II. It was one of the first two British shisp sunk in the Pacific.

Was't it sunk with torps on its way from HongKong or SIngapore to safer ports when Japan captured these cities ?

No, I think it was based in India. I'm not sure though. It and some British battleship were destroyed together. I think the Atlantic Charter was signed on the Repulse.
