Of course, military techniques and technology have progressed while the available battlefields, so to speak, remain the same. But, there's a lot of space in space.
In this case, sure, you could use long-range missiles and such. But the enemy would soon find a way to subvert them. And such missiles would more or less be unmanned ships anyway.
