Hi. I was just sitting down to have a look through the '03 Calendar for Ships of the Line.

I was looking at the very large Generations shot on top of the saucer of the E-D with all the shuttles. I think there is a new shuttle. And no, I'm not referring to the 'Executive Shuttle/Sydney class' looking shuttle.

It looks like a regular TNG shuttle - but it's not. It's to the exact left of the word 'JULY'. It's a wedge shaped shuttle. The front tapers. And the 'ceiling' tapers. It sort of looks like a runabout - but It's not - unless it's a prototype. The front 'ceiling' also curves down. And it looks larger than the other (are these type 6's or 7's) shuttle from TNG above the word 'JULY'. (Yes I guess there is a perspective thing happening there).

ALSO - the little shuttle that is landing (Well I guess it's the same type as the one above 'JULY' brought in during Season 5. Type 6? 7? 5? It looks much smaller than the Season 1 shuttles. I guess we've never really seen them near each other before. ANYWAY it appears to have little head lights. Or is this the Reaction Thrusters firing?? (Those little yellow things on the corners of the shuttles).

Andrew

P.S. Oh and if Mr. Mojo is reading this. Do you have a topic for the next calendar??

Andrew

The only new shuttle in "Generations" was the Hawking. http://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/scans/mechanics/st7-shuttle1.jpg
Maybe that's the one you mean?

There's no way it's that shuttle. Get out your calendar - it's touching the 'J' in 'JULY'.

The back is quite curvy and it's very triangular - i.e. the base is much wider then the 'roof'.

I don't have one. [Big Grin] I had the choice between a Star Trek and a Buffy calendar. Guess which one won.

I think I know which ones you mean. I don't have a scan of the calendar, but this is a pretty similar angle, even if the quality isn't great.

The one that's landing or lifting off looks like a Type-6 to me, but the ones with red boxes are definitely different from regular Type-7 shuttles. They have a ridge along the side, the windows wrap all the way around the front and the nacelles aren't attatched in the same way. I think they were first shown in the Starbase 74 painting.

It still looks like the Type 7 Shuttlecraft to me. We're just not used to seeing it from the back.

I definately say they are just normal Type-7s.

I say the one on the far left is a bulkier Type-7 variant, but the other two are ordinary versions.

From Dr. Phlox's scan you can see the difference:
From left to right:

New Airtram/Executive Shuttle/Farragut Transporter-thing
Type 7 variant
Type 6
Type 6
Type 6 (taking off)
another Farragut-Airtram-thing
Type 7 variant (in the background)
Type 7
Type 6

The one to the right (next to the Type 6) is a Type 7. You can see the back clearly (the curved, organic structure), but the one in the background and the one on top of the bay are not the same as this one. You can clearly see that the rear section of the one in the back seems to be chopped off (or in other words it looks more like the rear end of a Type 6). And the other one - maybe it's the reflection on its nose, but it looks "different".
Is this a shot of the real saucer model with matte-paintings of shuttles? Or real models? Or even CGI? If it's one of the latter options, we're probably seeing a new model, if it's just a matte of shuttles on the saucer it was probably the artist who didn't get the shuttles 100% right. If that's the case, they're supposed to be stndard-Type 7s. (Another possibility maybe: At that point the Voyager Type 8 - the Type7/6-hybrid ship - had already been "invented". Maybe we're looking at two Type 8-shuttles here. Does anybody have a good front/sideview of such a shuttlecraft?)

The Type 8 shuttle looks much more like the Type 6 than even remotely like the Type 7. And there have been two Type 7 variants. The more often seen one that was first seen as the Sakharov, and then the one seen as the Kotoi (the USS Liberator's shuttle.) There may even be two more variants... both study models which may have been constructed in the Trek universe.

In any case, the shuttles in the Generations scene are most probably all part of the matte painting. Only the single type 6 that is seen landing, and the executive shuttle seen flying overhead, are likely to be models. The type 7 seen from aft (the one on the right foreground) is very clearly painted in at least.

No doubt we could infer new variants from the artwork if we wanted. We could even claim the Enterprise-D had a large number of crew members from a race never seen before, with very clumsy-looking torsos and reddish complexion and the uncanny ability not to move an inch for the entire length of the shot. OK I'll fire up the scanner tomorrow.

I'll also go and look for a trading card that is from Season 1 TNG with a pic of the shuttle craft leaving the shuttlebay - taken by that kid who failed his academy entrance exam. I think "Unnatural Selection" also has a rear view - infront of that matt painting of Darwin Station.
