Not so much a bad pun as a ruthless piece of 10th century propaganda! The place was named by Eric the Red who started a colony there around 1000 A.D. When he went home to recruit more colonists, rather than call it Wasteland or Really Bloody Cold And Miserable Land, he thought the name of Greenland might be more enticing.

Yeah, but then you'd always hear that insipid "something is rotten in Denmark" line whenever the ship was mentioned.
