I don't think that time is the problem, it's the stock footage that they could no longer use.

I agree with Hobbes and Omega. Experimental ships/ first ship of the class carry the NX prefix until the experiment is done, but ships with experimental technology onboard also carry the NX prefix. It sounds so reasonable because of all the examples of this, seen above in other posts.
