When the Federation Fleet flies over the asteriod on a second pass, in an effort to confuse the orbital weapon stations with a false Federation signal on the asteriod, there is a view of a Miranda class starship. This starship's registry begins with NCC-186xx. I didn't catch the last two digits. This starship is in the middle of the screen. If someone has recorded this episode on video, can he get the last two digits? Thank you.

I presume you mean this ship:

I couldn't make out the registry on the MPEG which is all I have handy at the moment. . .

That's the Hood, IIRC.

Looks like Captain DeSoto or whomever is in command of the Hood by this time has a good helm, I rarely see an Excelsior move like that...

I haven't got the tape handy, but doesn't the Defiant look a wee bit too big in that pic?

I've got the CIC video tape of "TotP". Unfortunately, it is practically impossible to read the Miranda rego. Also unfortunate is that the Defiant appears to be 170m long.

The Defiant in this picture is seen full-on sideways, while the other ships are in perspective, so you cannot compare them just bij measuring the length in this picture.

Altair: Fundamentally you're right, but given the 3D information on where the ships are located (from the moving scene) it is possible to determine the sizes. We know that starships are filmed in a certain fashion in which they are all far enough away from the camera but not too far. So they are all roughly in the same plane, and you can extract this plane and determine which ships are closer or farther away from the viewer. Unfortunately it seems the Defiant is indeed 170m.

Only a guess, not that I actually precisely calculated the size from the above image

The ships are at very different angles, and we really don't know where they are in relation to each other (watch how they move in the scene). 170m is no more likely than 120m here.

Well, I did watch the scene just before I made my prior post. The Defiant is definately closer to 170m than 120m, here. In fact, the ship seems closer to 170m during all its scenes in that episode. It's also pretty obvious the FX were done in CGI by Mr Stipes. I don't know about you guys, but I thought the FX looked rubbish in "Tears...".

They were... well, almost; although I maintain that the worst DS9 FX ever were in "Valiant".

Not 170 metres! Evil, evil! Run away! Shall I flog Stipes as well?

BTW, this was the episode with the USS Defiant, NCC-74210.

Then, just perhaps, it's a very inconsistent episode FX-wise?
