What would be a good way of dividing ship production into periods for specific classes? For example
TOS 2235-2269 > Daedalus class and original Constitution class POST TOS 2269-2293 > Constitution class refit, Miranda, Excelsior, and Oberth PRE TNG 2293-2363> Constellation ------>New Orleans TNG 2363-2371> Galaxy---> Intrepid POST TNG 2371-PRESENT Defiant------>Prometheus

Sounds like a good system, but the Defiant itself would go in one category and the class into another...
Some ships could be from a few possible eras, though (Akira, Sabre), so...

Well, If you were going to put the defiant into two catagories, you would change the catagories.
I think Catagory Groups there are good but maybe alter them a bit to account for the first appearance of the class, i.e. the registry number of the NX vessel.
Daedelus Constitution
Constitution Refit Excelsior Constellation Miranda
Ambassador Norway Akira Steamrunner
Galaxy Nebula Olympic New Orleans Cheyenne
Danube Defiant Intrepid Sabre
Sovereign Nova Prometheus Data's Scout
Hmmmmmmm there seems to be about 4-5 classes with in each 'bracket'

Just as a side note, I'd like to point out that the only ships that we've actually seen with an NX regestry are those carrying experimental technology, so NX may signify that instead of class prototypes.

*SPOILERS*
My theory on the NX system goes thus: the class ship which bears the designation keeps it only as long as the technology is considered new. . . the first time it receives a major refit or upgrade, it reverts to NCC. Therefore by the time we see the USS Galaxy it is 10-15 years old, and just adding some of the refinements they developed, tried and tested on the Enterprise would add up to a significant overhaul of systems. Likewise the Excelsior. If the Defiant had survibed long enough to merit such a refit, as opposed to hasty repairs (Like after FC), it too would have changed to NCC.

Just thought I'd point out guys that the Nebula Class was introduced before the Galaxy Class, not after. The registry on Maxwell's U.S.S. Phoenix was lower than the U.S.S. Galaxy's. The New Orleans Class which obviously uses similar parts was also introduced prior to the Galaxy.
