Maybe that is the explanation for the Antares class!?! It was a junk-yard sort of class - where engineers made ships from what they could find... sometimes there were certain hull types that were more prevalent than others!?!
Or the rather lengthy thread we had here is also another explanation!
Or my suggestion that "Antares Class" is akin to "Starship Class" - sort of all-encompassing.

How do we actually know that there was an Antares Class, and that the Antares wasn't just part of another Class (as its 501 registry suggests)?

And where do we get that registry? Is it an Encycloepdia-only thing, or did Okuda actually hide the reference somewhere onscreen?
I don't much like the idea of any of the "random" ships from the shows being class ships. There usually are many, many ships in a class, so the odds of meeting the first one are low unless there is a special reason. And frankly, I'd love for this nice Concordance Antares to be a humble member of a class, rather than a class ship, too. "Humility" is written all over it, and nicely accentuated by Reverend's design...

I altered the encyclopedia reg for two reasons.
1) It fit's the Constituton-esq design era a little better.
2) Apparantly on of the FJ ships (a Saladin I think) is already NCC-501....Not that I really care but it looks better if I list two reasons instead of just the one.
In regards to this being the "Charlie X" Antares AND the class prototype; I simply say, why not? There's no real reason why it can't be, better to kill two ships with one design I say. Plus when you consider that there is only one other STARFLEET Antares-Class ship referenced and it's amoung a rag-tag fleet of half operational ships, an old 23rd Century Surveyor fits in there quite nicely I think.
