Both look good, but as a minor point of constructive criticism, and I'm going by gut feeling as I don't have references around me so please correct me if I'm wrong, but the legs look like they hug the body a little too closely. Should they be slightly offset a little further from the main torso?
Are you going to do a side view as well?? Waht would look really good is a half cutaway showing some of the Astromech's internals.
I'd like to see an R4 unit as well. I like the old coneheads!

Imagine an alternate Star Wars where - "red" didn't blow up after Owen paid for it? The rebels might have been crushed! Or "red" might have ended up defeating the Emperor instead!
Red... *I* am your... father! "Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep!!!!!!!!!"
"So! You have a SISter-mech!?! - Your programming betrays you..."

What exactly is the difference between an R5, and the red R2 that Andrew already made reference to? I never understood that.

Heheh - oh ok i'm confused in ANH - was the one that blew up a Red version of R2D2 or was it that one in the picture above? Is that ALSO an R2 unit - what then is an R5? What was obi wan's in ATOC? R14? Maybe they are colour codes... his was purple

The one that blew up in ANH (and, incidentally, was apparently eqipped with mini-transporter ) was NOT the red version of R2D2. It looked just like on picture above.

All of the Astromech droids can be physically distinguished by designation.
R2 Unit = Round Dome head R4 Unit = Faceted Cone Head R5 Unit = Truncated Cylinder Head
Those are the main three types seen in the Star Wars films. The only exception to this was because of a deleted scene/concept in EpII:AotC when the R4 Unit on Kenobi's Jedi Starfighter was damaged and although they salvaged the droid, the head casing was replaced with an R2 unit's head on Obi-Wan's ship. You'll notice in Episode II that Obi-Wan still refers to the droid as R4 though.

SoundEffect: Thanks! I use CorelDRAW 8. As for the legs, it depends on which references you look at. Personally, I don't think what shown is outside the realm of possibility.
I decided to do an R4 as well, since all I had to do was the head, as well as another R2.
The R4 (on the right) was being escorted out of the Tantive IV with several captured rebels at the beginning of ANH. The R2 on the left was next to R2-D2 during the Death Star briefing room scene. The R4's body stripes are a bit different than the movie prop, but I wanted them to line up with the head's stripes when it's looking forward.
I don't plan on doing a side view, but you know, these things are easy once you have the body done!

That still doesn't explain the R2 that blew up at the moisture farm in ANH. It can't have simply had its head replaced with an R5's, because Luke knew it was an R2 just from looking at it.
