The same way I knew it: You were so incredibly bored one evening, you watched TV. On top of that, you watched VH1. On top of that, you probably watched during one of VH1's horrible "Behind the Music" marathons, which are run every other week.
Don't feel too bad, though. VH1 ran that episode so often it's been spoofed by the Onion, MAD magazine, and "The Family Guy".
Part of our cultural memory now, I suppose.
