Since last year George Lucas has been dropping hints regarding the possibility of a TV series. Today they are no longer hints. On USA Today, the TV series was confirmed by Lucas and now most recently the President of Lucas licensing, Howard Roffman, has quoted stating that a live action TV Series will indeed hit airwaves by fall of 2006.

All indications from Skywalker Ranch point to George wanting to find someone to take creative control from his hands. George will remain as an "Executive Producer" but wants to have a creative team including veteran sci-fi writers and directors. The most interesting thing is that George is wanting to hand over the reigns of Star Wars to someone who will respect the films and is actually a fan of the saga. One name keeps popping up during my calls to my "Ranch" associates as a perfect candidate to become "Lord" over Star Wars. According to Lucasfilm insiders George would like someone with writing and directing experience and that already has a connection with the fan base and also be an independent film maker.

In a recent interview that we had with Star Trek head honchos Rick Berman and Manny Coto we asked them what kind of advice they would offer George Lucas regarding a weekly Star Wars TV series. "Its one thing to have three years and over a 100 million dollars to create a one 2 hour movie compared to 22 to 26 one hour episodes in a year with a very limited budget and still have to remain fresh in the eyes of your audience", said Berman. Manny Coto also had a good point when he said " You have to concentrate on the story and also the characters and not make a weekly special effects show." When asked if he had any other advice for George, "He can always hire me if Enterprise doesn't work out".

Mabye they'll have a yeary christmas special...it could be a musical and....

NAAAAA!

If they want a series to really work, they'll have to have one set storyline to follow for the length of the series (or at least a long term outline) to preserve any of that "original trilogy magic" and they'll need to set it after RTOJ.

I'd hope Lucas would be familliar with the pitfalls of prequels by now...

We need a series focusing on a non-Force user (Wedge?) and -please god- keep R2 and 3PO out of it!

Are you kidding? The laws of generic Sci-Fi series state that every new show must have an android/alien/ghost/talking-datapad as sidekick, as a funky ingredient. With wisecracks, rimshots and feeble attempts at emulating human culture to follow. They laugh, they learn, they charm their way into our hearts.

This could be the shot of Viagra the SW-franchise really needs, though. It just has to do what Star Trek, Babsicon 5 and X-Files haven't done yet. Piece of cake.

It'll have to be set far enough from the movie plot lines that we don't need to see the characters from the movies to make it work, but not so far that it has nothing to do with the movies, either.

My guess is that it'll be set years before Episode 1 while the Jedi are still a domiant force. The fans love the Jedi and want to be able to see cool lightsabery stuff. I guess the other option is to set it years after RotJ and having Jedi from Luke's academy be a main plot focus.

I suppose one of the plusses is that they already have so much creative material to work with. Think of all the CGI models they already have that can be used.

Think of the line down the block of well-known actors clamoring to be in anything "Star Wars".

Plenty would turn down a movie deal to play a Jedi Master for a season or two (even on TV).

I'm thinking it would more likely be the latter. That way, they reserve the possibility of bringing in one of the original actors for a "special guest appearance" or something.

That, plus we get all the awfulness of the Starfleet Academy series concept. Because we all know whatever they do will suck.

Just for the record.
I liked Droids.
Of course I was probably 10 or something when it was airing. But I liked it.

He couldn't have done that seven years ago when TPM went into pre-production?

I really thing one concept might work is that of post-ROTJ crew of a "Millennium Falcon" type freighter (not that the ship is neccessarily the same type of ship, just ya' know), dealing with both the New Republic, and the remenants of the Empire, and a few other little factions running around, trying to keep their stomachs full and ...

... oh, wait, that's Firefly.

I think a post-ROTJ series is the way to go. Thanks to the prequel trilogy we know what happened to lead to the Empire. With the exception of some GREAT books by Tim Zahn, and some crappy books by everybody else, I think the post-ROTJ period is the best way to go.

Maybe Lucas wil include a young Harrison Ford in Episode III, played by River Phoenix. . .
