But if one takes the possibility of existence of the Stargate device as a given... How plausible is it then that what we see in the show would be happening right now in the bowels of Cheyenne Mountain and out there in the galaxy?
Would the Goa'uld orbital attack on Earth have gone unnoticed by everybody except SGC? What about the little weather-tampering gizmo? Or a secret USAF operation to transport a big flat container from Antarctica? A black hole opening inside Cheyenne Mountain? Would the existence of SGC still be a secret, now that Russians also have a gate of their own?
Does the Goa'uld empire sound plausible? Hundreds of Earth cultures transplanted to distant planets, where they have maintained their old ways for centuries yet learned to speak English? Advanced starfaring species who get defeated in combat again and again by 4-8 USAF or USMC personnel carrying submachine guns? Big system lords displaying strange restraint and not destroying Earth for all the trouble it has caused them?
I think some minor suspension of disbelief is required at some point.

Timo mentioned the second Stargate found in Antarctica. I saw the ep where they found it, but the only other mention I've heard of it is when one of the System Lords demanded the return of BOTH of the Tauri (I think that was the word he used for "Earth's") Stargates.
So whatever happened to the other Stargate? Is that how the Russians got one? I thought you could only use one at a time on any given planet. Please fill in a casual viewer, Timo...

The 3rd-season finale (or was it 4th?) features an alien ship (of the Asgard?) which has been infected with these robot spider things probably nicked off the Lost In Space movie. At the end the ship crashes into the Pacific (with barely anyone on Earth noticing). The Russians later salvage a Stargate from the wreckage. When they get it working it causes a few problems, but then that plot arc was written off by saying the US gave Russia a lot more aid money in return for not using it.

Hang on... How could they use it? It wouldn't have the "Earth" symbol on it...

IIRC, each gate is dialed by entering the 6 symbols that identify the coordinates of the end gate and then the 7th which identifies the gate you're starting from. So there would need to be the little A with the circle over it for anyone to use a gate on Earth. At least I think that's right.
