A kind of dumb thing to worry about, but the other night I was trying to figure out precisely which ship classes have been mentioned by name in dialogue on any of the TV shows, or movies. All I could come up with was:

Constitution Class
(not sure of when it was first mentioned in fact -an oft pondered point, although I know for sure it was in TNG's 'Relics' - this might actually be the only time, ever, that this class ship was given its class name in dialogue)

Daedalus Class
Named in 'Power Play'

Soyuz Class
Named in 'Cause And Effect'

Excelsior Class
First named/portrayed in ST:III etc....

Antares Class
I think first mentioned in 'Face of The Enemy'. But lets dispense with debating what this class is for now

Constellation Class
First named in 'The Battle'

Nebula Class
First mentioned in 'The Wounded'

Galaxy Class
First mentioned in 'Encounter At Farpoint'

Defiant Class
'The Search', plus many other DS9 references.

Intrepid Class
First so named in 'Caretaker'

Nova Class
First named in 'Equinox'

Sovereign Class
First named in ST: First Contact

And that's all! I think.

There's been other occasions where a prototype ship has been mentioned which might also count, such as the Bradbury, Yellowstone and the Prometheus. But I recall no mention, in dialogue, of any other classes, even the more major ones, like Ambassador Class, Oberth and Miranda. Maybe Danube Class has been mentioned by name, but I'm not sure..?

We also of course have some Enterprise info as well, NX Class, J Class, Surak Class (possibly) etc...

So can anyone else add to any of this?

Danube-class has been mentioned on-screen a few times. I can't remember which episodes exactly; I want to say that "Emissary" had a mention.

Sovereign-class hasn't been mentioned in dialog, yet. All we have going for it are some closeups of the master situation display that show the words "Sovereign Class" in big letters.

Miranda, Oberth, Akira, Steamrunner, Sabre, and Norway have not had mentions. I don't think that any of the ones we know from Mike Okuda have been mentioned on-screen, either (like Freedom, Rigel, etc.).

From Enterprise, we have the NX-class ships of the line. We've also heard mention of Y-class freighters. J-class I think is originally from The Original Series (as are F and S, I think. I'm fuzzy about this). Surak-class is actually something like Suurok and is a Vulcan class vessel.

The Ambassador-Class was mentioned in TNG Conspiracy.
The Danube-Class was mentioned in DS9 Hippocrathic Oath IIRC.

We've got the following classes from computerdisplays or dedication plaques:
Apollo, Bradbury, Korolev, Merced, Miranda, New Orleans, Oberth, Prometheus, Renaissance, Sydney (could have been in dialogue too), Wells, Yellowstone

Oh yes, Y-Class, I forgot about that.

Are you sure that Sovereign Class has never been mentioned? I was positive that Picard mentioned it to Lily as they made their way through the ship back to the bridge. He gives a speech describing the various stats of the ship, and the Federation as a whole.

I'll have to rewatch the movie, because I don't really remember him telling her the class name of the Enterprise. I remember the 24 decks, 150 worlds in the Federation, and all that. I could be wrong.

Cheers Spike, I was particularly interested in actual spoken references to the classes, but Ambassador, in 'Conspiracy', you say? Now that is interesting and it had quite passed me by. I'm gunna check that out.

i'm pretty sure that Ambassador class wasn't named until "Yesterday's Enterprise". the Horatio was simply called a heavy cruiser in "Conspiracy", if i recall correctly (and i'm 100% positive that i do).

[edited because i left a letter out of my own name. *sigh*]

They certainly didn't say the words "Defiant class" in The Search.

No, Ambassador-class wasn't mentioned in "Yesterday's Enterprise". In "Conspiracy" Data said something like: "The third is just coming into range... Heavy cruiser... Ambassador-class... U.S.S. Horatio."

Anybody have "Conspiracy?" Seems that we always only guess what an episode says and no one ever looks at the episode.

I remember "Ambassador-class heavy cruiser" from Conspiracy.

Danube-class from "Hippocratic Oath," although an earlier mention is concievable.

Defiant-class from "Valiant"

I guess more interesting would be ship classes that haven't yet had their names referenced in dialogue. Oberth? Miranda?

Yes, I've just reviewed the scene and Data's line was something like "the third ship is Ambassador Class, Heavy Cruiser". Worf had initially called the first two ships, Rutledge and Thomas Paine, Frigates, thought not called them New Orleans Class, unfortunately. The Enterprise-C was never referred to as Ambassador class though in 'Yesterday's Enterprise'.

Ok Sol, Defiant Class may not have been precisely mentioned in The Search, but it was the ship's first appearance. At some point or another in the series it must have been called Defiant Class.

Seigfried: I reviewed that scene from FC, and I believe you're right, Sovereign Class wasn't mentioned at that point in the movie, but I'm still sure it has been mentioned somewhere.

Well, I do. But I'm the one who told Spike the line at his request... Transcribed it into AOL Instant Messenger as it was being spoken.
