You see, I have to agree with Dax. I don't think that "Defiant-class" was mentioned at all in the episode. And the conversation between Nog and Jake, as I remember it, goes something like Jake saying "It's the Defiant! No... wait... it's the Valiant?"
If someone has the episode, can he or she please check it out? If I am going senile, I'd like to know now.

I remember there being two or three references that the Valiant was similar to the Defiant, but I don't think Defiant-class was actually said. Bugger it, I might just watch the episode again tomorrow - although it will be about the fifth time I've seen it, and it's not even that good.
As for the scripts, I personally don't entirely trust 'em.
The *ONLY* place the words "Defiant-class" were mentioned in that order and with that intent is in "The Dogs of War". Ezri says it, and there was quite a bit of talk on it when she finally did and put the whole "Valiant-class" thing to rest. And I'm willing to bet money on it.

So, was the Valiant specifically named Defiant-Class or not? Maybe it's a variant of the Defiant class with quantum torpedo launchers, called the Valiant-Class. Maybe NX-74210-C?

As a matter of fact, I seem to recall the uproar surrounding "Valiant" was the fact that they didn't say it, and we all wished they had.

Anyway, the "Valiant" episode uproar *was* about their attempt to call it a Defiant-class ship, but with it coming off only that it *wasn't* a Valiant-class ship. The only clue in that episode (which I have on tape) was Nog saying that the NCC number was 74210, thus higher than Defiant, thus newer, thus NOT the class ship. We were all rather upset at that, but the episode more-or-less did its job. We simply didn't hear "Defiant-class" until "The Dogs of War".
