I went poking around some TF sites and boards for the first time in a while, and found out the next series has been revealed. Here's what I've been able to put together:

It will be entitled "Transformers: Robots in Disguise." Yes, the old catch phrase is back!

Instead of being a CGI series made by Mainframe, "Robots in Disguise" will be a dub of Japan's latest cel-animated TF series "Car Robots."

"Car Robots" is apparantly an alternate universe TF series, but "Robots in Disguise" may have dialogue altered to make it fit into North American continuity.

"Car Robots" takes place in 2001, with Autobots vs. Predacons (from the future), although as stated, this may change in the American dub.

A lot of the characters in "Robots in Disguise" will have the same names as classic TF characters, like Optimus Prime.

Voice actors haven't been announced yet, so they might be those from Beast Wars/Machines, or they might get some of those from the original TF series back (goodness knows Peter Cullen's been active doing promos for Toonami lately).

It should be airing this fall on Fox.

I am, unsurprisingly, quite excited.

They really should look into Peter Cullen as Prime. I can't think of anyone better.

Is Robert Stack still alive?

I've watched a few translated episodes of 'Car Robots' and, despite the lack of a name bearing any semblance of imagination, they weren't complete pants.

I think Robert Stack is still alive. Speaking of which, is Unsolved Mysteries still making new episodes? I haven't seen commercials for it lately, but I never heard anything about it being cancelled either.

If any G1 voice actor would return, I would say it would be Susan Blu (spelling?). After all, she was the voice director for Beast Wars/Machines, and did do the voice of Transmutate.

Apparently, the voice work will be done by the Ocean Group. Which isn't that surprising. Still, at least after having already dubbed around 9 million other anime shows, they'll have afair amount of experience.

Some silly people were sad at this, because it meant that david Kaye couldn't do Megatron (Gigatron), the Preadacon leader. Those people are stupid, though.

Since we've got the BW voice team working on them, I see:

David Kaye as Megatron (since there's NOTHING to indicate that this is G1 Megatron. I'd much rather it be BW Megatron. Apart from being a better character, it's a nice body for him. Far better than his BM "Body".)

Ian chorlett as Speedbreaker (he's an annoying little shit, who transforms into a fast thing. *cough*)

Scott McNeil as everyone else.

Actually, I'm not that thrilled by it. Partly because I know have to wade through message boards full of people going "Yes! Carz rulez! Optimus is a truck not a monkey!" and so on. Also "People don't want beasts! They want cars!" when they actually mean "the public loved beasts! BW sold like hot cakes! But I want cars, because I live in the past!".

Oh, and they are also completely failing to realise that, since most of them have the Car Robots toys already, they aren't getting new toys for a year (current "official story" is that this show is a place-holder, and we'll get the next US TF story either late this year or early next year).

Tsk. Still, at least this'll give me an excuse to get JRX.

What? He's not coming out? Bastards!

And just to be picky, Car Robots has the Cybertrons vs the Destrongers. Cybertrons = ALL the good guys. The Autobots were called Cybertrons in the original series. The Maximals are called Cybertrons in Beast Wars, Beast Wars II, Beast Wars Neo, Beast Wars: For Great Justice! And so on.

The Decepticons/Predacons have been called either Destron or Destrongers. The Autobot/Predacon idea has probably come from the fact that, in Car Robots, the Cybertrons use the G1 Autobot logo, and the Destrongers use the Predacon logo. Or some of them do. Some use an upside down G2 Autobot logo.

I wonder what black convoy would be called... and who'll do his voice? Brian Drummond (Vegeta/Jetstorm)?

I'm confused. Can David Kaye do Megatron again or not?

And I'll be the first to admit that my knowledge of Japanese TFs is limited at best.

Sorry, I was slagging off people on Transformer newsgroups who SHOULD KNOW BETTER!

Yes he can. The Ocean group, which dub(ed) DragonBall Z, Gundam Wing, and, er, other anime that isn't Sailor moon or Pokemon or, er, others, also did the voices for Beast Wars. Type Scott McNeil into the Internet Movie Database, and you'll see literally some things that he's done.

So, yeah, all the BW guys will almost certainly be doing Robots in Disguise. And David Kaye's a shoe-in for Gigatron/Megatron (argh! If they're going for "Predacons", why didn't they just keep the name "Gigatron". He's rather obviously not like Megatron (as oppossed to how much Fire Convoy looks like Prime). I dunno if Gary Chalk will do Prime though...

Still, I wonder how'll they'll explain the fact that the series starts off in Japan? Because foreign = evil.

Still, we should just be thankful that there aren't any lesbians in it.

Hang on...

Beast Wars: For Great Justice!, Indeed.

[It's 240kb, and fast moving. It's the best I could do unless you want a 8MB .swf file.]

"Car Robots"? How imaginative. "Robots In Disguise", do they need a support group? "Friends, say hello to autotechnitron. -HIIIII AUTOTECHNITROOOOON...."

I liked RoboTech better... More detailed, more realistic. And dramatic. And no laughing washing machines.

No, I'll take 'guardian-configuration' over flying dumptrucks any day.

There, that should stir things up nicely.

Ultra Magnus, I hereby declare you to be officially frightening me.

I shall think Robotech was pretty good so long as the mental block in my brain preventing me from remembering how an obnoxious tone-deaf girl is able to convince millions of genetically-engineered warriors to surrender simply by singing to them remains. I should also note that I am still quite annoyed at Cartoon Network for not airing the Invid Invasion episodes.

Well, I get a big nostalgia-kick from it as well, but "Transformers" does nothing for me. Look, I wasn't being dead-serious about the whole robo-manga debate, it's such a subjective area. Just thought I'd shift the balance, is all. Feggedaboutit.

Pfft. I'd rather watch "Macross," "Southern Cross," & "Mospeada." In the original forms, not as some sort of hodgy-podgy mishmash.

I should point out at this juncture that Transformers is in no-way "robo-manga". Since it didn't have a manga strip (almost. There were a couple of Beast Wars manga strips. And very violent they were too), and second, Transformers (the show) originated in the US.

And it had a far better theme tune too. "Just one beat, communication"? Please... Burning Overdrive, now THAT's a theme tune. "Go Boy, Convoy!"
