It was censored because the accursed foul computer I was typing on has Net Nanny, because I'm typing at work... I'm a children's librarian, remember?

Any post from me that originates before 6:00 PM is from work.
SHH! Don't tell. I'm not supposed to be doing this.
And you must be the only non-newbie who doesn't know my occupation.

Seems a bit strange. I mean, if a kid knows the word orgy, then stopping him from typing it is hardly going to make the information jump out of his brain.
And "orgy"? What other words are censored?
-------------------- Yes, you're despicable, and... and picable... and... and you're definitely, definitely despicable. How a person can get so despicable in one lifetime is beyond me. It isn't as though I haven't met a lot of people. Goodness knows it isn't that. It isn't just that... it isn't... it's... it's despicable.
Net Nanny and all programs like it are flawed attempts at censorship by various organizations.
Personally, I'm against them entirely when it comes to public access (I find censorship insulting -- it's Them saying 'you're too stupid to make this decision, we'll decide for you')... but it's better we have them than risk getting sued by some overzealous Fundie-minded parent... and it's easier than policing the computers ourself, to keep the teenage boys out of the nudie sites.

That's about the only reason one should have this.
I recently revisited my old Library to check on a book. And there are two boys sitting there in the Children's section, looking at those nudie sites. The Library Attendent is in plain view and she is basically doing _nothing_ about it.
So I told her.
She shooed the kids off the computer and shut down the browser. But what she should have done is kick the kids out of the Library or at least done something else because a few minutes later, those two same kids are in the REFERENCE section looking at, you guessed it.....

I have an 18-inch wooden ruler with a metal edge named "Mr. Pain" that I keep for just that sort of person.
Let me tell you a story from today...
This lady brought in her 5-year old daughter and her daughter's friend.
They wanted to use the computer. But the Board says the computers are for 6 and up, no exceptions, sorry.
So when I inform them of this, the daughter screws up this horrible face, and says "you're MEAN! I HATE you!"
But it gets worse.. as mommy fails totally to correct THAT behavior, choosing rather to wander around poking at books, her little angel mutters loudly, at least three times, "I'm gonna strangle your neck."
A FIVE-YEAR-OLD!
Mom, meanwhile, tries to convince me to let them on if she sits there and watches them, and I'm thinking "Yeah, I'm gonna let too-young kids with an OBVIOUS lack of discipline play with thousands of dollars' worth of electronics. Right."
So I say no, and they leave.
Humans.

*Certain* parents need to start EDUCATING their children again, and take some damned responsibility.
*Certain* other people need to realise that a lack of said education and discipline is what causes children to turn into out-of-control antisocial fruitcakes.
It's the usual story: they suffer from ADHD, play/watch too many violent games/TV shows (which aren't meant to be played or watched by young - impressionable - minors in the first place), etc. Is there some kind of mass-psychosis going on, or are most parents simply dumbfucks these days?
Anyway. How did we go from interesting personal details about FoT, to rant about large social problem?

I think we were discussing his job and how they have a word censor program operating and then people started to share their experience and that's how we got to where we are.
You know, we should start a separate thread for that stuff - I just burst out laughing at how bad that little girl was and how USELESS! the mother was. It would be so funny to hear about everyone's experiences and view on the subject.
Now back to the core subject of this thread - First of Two!

It's probably the fabled British reserve (heh), but I can't imagine anyone looking up porn on a library computer. It'd be, well, embarrasing. People wouldn't be embarassed. They'd be laughing at you.
